Heard about Fisher's attidude towards post-mortem statistical analysis before. But this is still very fun to read: 'Biological workers were shy of mathematics and certainly to begin with felt that the statistician should only be called in after the data had been collected.' (from Fisher's biography)

E B Ford told us one of his colleagues lamented that today's knowledge is but tomorrow's error. Another colleaugue corrected the former, saying that today's knowledge is tomorrow's special case. This is a wonderful scientific version of the 'is the class half empty or half full' expression.

Got these for $30. The smaller one is a concise version of the larger. Ford is a key figure in modern synthesis. He reviewed field observations for his theory on supergene and polymorphism. Ford’s dense style reminded me of his close ally RA Fisher, both in denial of the importance of genetic drift

Galton’s Hereditary Genius, a reprint of 2nd ed. First book to use the term eugenics. Galton’s cousin Darwin respected his abilities, citing Galton’s work in eg The Descent of Man. Darwin seems to have been unenthusiastic about eugenics, sparing him from having his reputation ruined a century later

Habits taught physicists to look for elegant laws in biology. But biology’s only rule is: whatever works. Whatever that works, regardless how inelegant, will be embedded in organisms via evolution. This reminds me of the recent Themis to Workday mayhem at unimelb. Don’t change what already works!

A new test for LLM? 😂 Seems that the newest Claude 4.0 has no clue about violin finguring. It says the openning bar of violin part here is played using 1st position, but it should be 3rd. I tried a few pieces. Seems that Claude has no difficulty understanding other aspects but finguring
