I spent a couple days last week doing research for my book at the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison. A beautiful building full of archived knowledge, helpful librarians, and letters and photos no one had looked at in decades.

"Of the one hundred strong and stout-hearted sons of Washington county who bade farewell to home and friends at the head of Lake St. Croix on that April morning over two years before, by reason of sickness, shot and shell only thirty-five answered to the roll-call on the eve of [Gettysburg]..."

Our local beach requires a 10-minute break when everyone is out of the water at the top of each hour. During today's 5 pm break, a loon swam inside the buoys while I watched from the sand. Just another way birds are more free than you and me.

We canoed among fireflies last night. Came across one on the water's surface. Somehow got it on my paddle. Placed it on the thwart, carried him along until he disappeared into the darkness.

Didn't fish today, chased feathers instead of fins, opted for friends in the forest over water and boats. No catching, no releasing, just awe. No regrets.
