adding to OP's note: if you're taking on more comms because you're strapped for money, but still owe work, you'll sabotage yourself VERY quickly whatever short-term income you get is not worth the huge hit to your reputation and long-term income ask for donos instead, OR at the very least

A percentage of your clients are going to be repeat commissioners. Another percentage of your clients heard about you from word of mouth. 🧵

I've been using PayPal invoices for years, mentioning the word "commission" and have had no problems. The issue arises when you do business by making people pay via Friends & Family. Please stop spreading misinformation.
When art is made primarily for creative fulfillment, I am not beholden to any responsibility. I can set arbitrary goals and never meet them, fantasize about ambitions and avoid what is difficult or uninteresting, and take as many breaks as I want. If I did the same for my job I couldn't pay bills.

reminder that history has always been multiple events happening concurrently, but humans having the ability to see these events unfold in practically live-time is VERY new because of the internet. we were not built to handle this level of constant stress. 🧶(+)
