I still send stuff to my dad on Instagram even though he’s not around to look at it. I send him stuff I think he’d like. Sometimes it’s funny stuff. Most of the time it’s something about people being good to each other. Because that’s just about exactly who my dad was in between the laughter.

Just introducing myself here... I’m Brent, I write YA fiction, and I am trapped in the midwest (just not the prettiest parts of it). I generally post and interact with stuff about… ✍🏻 Writing 📖 Reading 📚 Publishing ✈️ Traveling 🧑‍🏫 Teaching ☕️ Coffee •Grief (sorry, there’s no dead dad emoji)

Fun Fact: The word poem can be traced back to the Greek word poiein literally meaning "thing made or created.” This implies that anything a human being makes can be considered a poem if you want. Including this post. Or this 5th coffee I’m making. Don’t be a poetry purist. It’s all poems, bro.

One of my creative writing students today: “Jazz is to music as poetry is to writing.” I’m bouta throw so much Langston Hughes at this kid and he doesn’t know it yet but he’s very excited about it.

Lotta new apps. Too many some would argue. But I gotta say, out of all the options (Instagram, TikTok, BlueSky, X, Threads, Discord, SnapChat, TimeShredder, AddictScroll, MeanScreen, Swipetap, ProLapse, Venmo, etc.) I like disappearing into the woods the best.

Kinda dumb how rock and roll as a genre is a monarchy when really the King of Rock and Roll was elected by popular demand. Like that’s the voice of the people. Should be President of Rock and Roll but I’m not President or King of anything so what do I know I’m just some guy.

PSA: Picture books really do be hard af to write. I heard them say it. I believed them. But now I’m learning that shit the hard way like I’m a five foot tall man trying to climb into his cybertruck without a step stool.

Saw this quote this morning and it was bussin bussin for my brain today: “Your mind doesn’t wander. It moves toward what it finds most interesting. To improve focus, become curious about what’s in front of you.” - Muscara

Alright, well, I decided to give BlueSky a chance tonight and the first handful of posts fed to me had big anti-billionaire undertones. So, hey everyone. I’ll stick around and check this place out.
