The president is refusing to spend taxpayer money assisting Americans suffering from natural disasters solely because their states didn't vote for him. I know there are a thousand scandals at the moment, but this one deserves some more oxygen at every level.

But the reality is that beyond ideology, being professional in a transactional way is important to winning credit to people you want to help you. I've heard this among career civil servants as well (though less w this administration). Competence matters.

This is a core theme you deal with as a fact checker. When tracing a fact back to it’s original source you see how *incredibly common* it is for stuff to be made up by a single source and then get repeated enough times by other sources that frequency of repetition convinces everyone it’s true.

It's *crazy* no one checked this. I saw someone saying it was fake earlier and then saw the BBC article and was thinking "surely they checked?"

This is a very worrying story. Ecuadorian fishermen are being attacked and killed, and the perpetrators seem to be either the U.S. military engaged in clandestine operations or an American mercenary company working for Bukele or another Central American country.
