Writer/Educator/Acupuncturist in Washington State. Bread Loaf '23 alum. Pronounced WORD-a-man.
I don't know how to explain to the people who pop up when creatives complain about "AI" to say there are legit uses for it just how much they sound like someone saying "Well actually fire is used to make bread" when people are talking about an organized arson ring burning down their fucking houses
Hope it's clear I'm not suggesting that writing by hand is the only valid way to write. That's as ridiculous as suggesting that a failure to rely on chatbots means you'll get left behind.
Time I made a confession. These days, I use AI in all my writing. AI stands for "actual ink." See what I do is I put ink into a pen and then I use it to write things. This technological marvel has revolutionized my drafting process. Writing IS thinking. Writing without thinking is useless to me.
Go ahead, outsource all your family moments to AI. What are memories, anyway?
this is demonic. sorry to say but if you do this you should be shipped to a desert island away from the rest of us who still have human souls
Our entire culture is based in trying to avoid death and pain. I would never disrespect my dead father with an AI facsimile.
🧵Some things: I'm in a moment where I *desperately* want my mom. But that comes with the awareness that I miss her actual presence, lived experience, and the unique thing that was our relationship. Information given to a program *cannot* be those things.
"...I now carry those library hours with me wherever I go." Beautiful essay by @the-big-quiet.bsky.social.
Happy to have an essay from my forthcoming collection up @literaryhub.bsky.social today! "The time a library lends, I suspect, is a little like love: the more it gives away, the more comes back to it in kind."
One of those nights when your Tarot cards describe what you said in therapy and then a little more. The part you only said to yourself.
In 25 years of teaching creative writing, by far and away the two most common traits I've seen among successful writers are that they read avidly and that they support other writers enthusiastically.
Accidentally typed character named Billy as Silly, first time ever in 5+ years; one letter and I would have written an entirely different novel.
Amber is a phenomenal teacher--one of the best!
Friends! I am teaching a workshop in December that I am so excited about! I’ve been writing and writing about domestic fabulism forever, but I’ve never actually fashioned a workshop around it before. I think this is going to be so much fun - I hope you’ll join!
I miss the addictiveness in that everyone was in one place.
I don't miss the addictiveness of Twitter but many times I feel like I'm posting for 5 of you here.
I wanted to share probably the most important sermon I’ve given and it’s while I’m being arrested. It’s torture pure and simple what happens at #Broadview. I’m ok, though I was thrown to the ground and choked with my pectoral cross. A review of the video shows I was peaceful - did I deserve this?
A leader would not have lost eight colleagues tonight. This happened because you let it happen or because you’ve totally lost control of the caucus in one of the most important moments since you’ve been Democratic leader. Either way, it’s on you. You need to step down. We need someone who can lead.
Democrats have been fighting for months to address America's healthcare crisis For the millions who will lose coverage For people with cancer who won't get the care they need For working families who can't afford to pay $25K more a year for healthcare We will keep fighting
One of my niche ethical stances is that I think that people should use Wikipedia and donate to the Wikimedia Foundation and that ChatGPT and its siblings are trash and so are the people who use them.
About the man and about the state of our country.
Auto correct just turned my name into Star Wars and surely now I have special powers.
This one made me cry. Painfully astute.
Lately I’ve been doing interviews for my new book, and I keep getting some variation of the same question: How do you stay hopeful? In truth, a lot of the time I’m not. September’s comic is about what it feels like to be losing hope. You can read it here: aubreyhirsch.substack.com/p/the-storie...
I didn't know Oval Office was having a worst-spoken-word-poetry-contest.
Hegseth: "Maximum lethality -- not tepid legality. Violent effect, not politically correct. We're gonna raise up warriors. Not just defenders."
Working on a new novel. It has decided to be set in 2014-2015 and I am legit excited for the music I'll be listening to for the several next years.
things were better when the computer lived in its own specific room and you only went in there sometimes
An amazing offering--I love studying sentences with Nina! (And the cost-benefit is ridiculous...don't tell her she should be charging more!) open.substack.com/pub/ninaschu...

I think that if you're a writer and you don't invent a word every now and then you're missing out on a solid chunk of the fun.
Autocorrect changed "my novel" to "my love" and, yes.
Legit the funniest best book promo video. I laughed so hard.
I tried to make a promotional video for my new book, LOL
I'm excite for this one! "...a parallel with the way chronically ill people don’t fit neatly into the prevailing healthy-sick binary. For that reason, she says, 'it would be hard for me to write about the sick body without writing about the racialized body as well.' "
