Today marks 10 years since the tragic murder of Batley and Spen MP Jo Cox, whilst she was serving her constituents. In her Maiden's Speech, Jo said ' we are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us.'

It was fantastic to attend the annual Harold Wilson Lecture at Huddersfield Uni last night, and hear from Lord Blunkett. I loved hearing about Wilson’s life, & the legacy celebrated thru this lecture series. Thanks to Lord Blunkett for coming back to Huddersfield Uni to contribute to this event.

It was great to have the fantastic Dr Zubir Ahmed MP, Minister for Health Innovation visit Huddersfield today to see the partnership work between Huddersfield Uni, Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Trust and health innovation partnerships. On route, we had to stop by the wonderful Harold Wilson statue!

The second of my #InternationalWomensDay2026 local women series is Daphne Steele – the first black Matron in the NHS. I was delighted to be there at the opening of the Daphne Steele building as part of the Huddersfield University Health Innovation Campus in 2024.

For #InternationalWomensDay2026 I will be celebrating local inspiring women. First is Karen Spärck Jones, who discovered the software behind the modern search engine, and was born in our town!

From April, hundreds of children in Huddersfield will benefit from the next rollout of free school breakfasts. I am delighted that Oak House CofE Primary and Lowerhouse Primary have been selected to receive funding for this!

Today is World Cancer Day – a day to open the conversation about cancer, prevention, early detection, and treatment. Today, the Government published the National Cancer Plan. Backed by a £2 billion investment, this plan will ensure faster diagnosis, faster treatment, and better health outcomes.

A fantastic event coming up from Councillor Munir Ahmed and Councillor Tyler Hawkins. Head along to the DRAM Centre on Wednesday 4th February for a free jobs fair offering a wide range of local job opportunities, apprenticeships and careers advice.

The Government have announced proposals to reform policing. These include a new National Police Service and restoring neighbourhood policing. I asked the Home Secretary how these reforms will help to tackle organised crime and country lines networks as well as the work of violence reduction units.

In Parliament, I signed the Holocaust Educational Trust Book of Commitment to mark Holocaust Memorial Day- honouring those who were murdered during the Holocaust as well as paying tribute to the extraordinary survivors who continue to work tirelessly to educate us today.

It was lovely to visit Spring Grove Primary School last week, to talk to pupils about the importance of learning about politics and democracy, and what my role is as their Member of Parliament.

It was fantastic to visit Wayland Additive and meet CEO, Will Richardson last week. The company specialise in advanced manufacturing and 3D metal printing and it was great to hear about their innovative work and goals for expansion in the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Huddersfield University Heritage Quay last week – where I got to see the wonderful Women in Rugby League exhibition put together by Julia Lee. The archives are open Monday – Friday 9-5pm for the general public, and are definitely worth a visit!

Last week, I visited Fusion Housing to learn about the incredible work they are doing in Huddersfield. They aim to prevent and relieve poverty and homelessness by providing housing, advice, advocacy, practical resources, training, and supported and emergency accommodation to those who need it.

The plans for Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) will be truly transformative for communities in Yorkshire. Yesterday, I welcomed the £45 billion investment into NPR alongside the ongoing work on the Transpennine Route Upgrade. These projects will be key to unlocking the potential of the North.

I have been horrified to see in recent weeks how the ‘Grok’ AI tool on X has been used to create sexually explicit and degrading images of women and children. It is insulting that the Platform will allow people to access the service via subscription – this does not go anywhere near far enough.1/4
