NEWS: The House has passed the Ukraine Support Act, 226-195, to provide new military aid to Ukraine and impose tougher sanctions on Russia. The bill advanced through a discharge petition despite Speaker Mike Johnson's efforts to block a vote.

#ResistanceRoots It might seem as if opposition to abortion has been a fixture of right-wing politics forever, but it only dates to the 1970s. Repub strategists and the emerging Christian Right manufactured abortion as a wedge issue because they wanted to maintain racially segregated schools. /1

Immediately following the 1973 Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, abortion was not strictly a partisan issue. In fact, many prominent Repubs, including First Lady Betty Ford, supported the ruling, while many Democrats opposed it. However, the rise of the anti-abortion movement was harnessed to unite a disaffected "conservative" base. While the movement was originally led by Catholic groups, strategists such as Paul Weyrich and Jerry Falwell recognized abortion as a potent, morally charged issue that could galvanize white evangelical Christians.
