I contributed a bit of research to this well-written primer of the odd trajectory of the Donkey Kong series, how its unique history created a set of circumstances that would have been unthinkable for comparable game franchises, and how 45 years of disparate directions finally converged in Bananza.

Lakitu's Japanese name, Jugemu, is taken from a folk tale about a boy with an extremely long name. However, the name is so absurdly long that several other Lakitu-related names were also taken from different parts of it, and it still has space for more references in the future.

"Jugemu" is a Japanese folk story about a boy with an extremely long name. After giving Lakitu a name in Japanese that referenced it, this became a running gag in Mario games, resulting in various spiky or Lakitu-adjacent entities taking names from it.
Here is how the story goes:
A father goes to the local temple to ask the priest for a good name for his newborn son. The priest suggests many different names that are supposed to bring good fortune. Unable to decide, the father simply named his son every single suggestion all at once.
The boy's name is...

The DK Vine review of Yooka-Replaylee will be posted a bit later today. Still, after staying up too late playing it last night, I'll say it's definitely an upgrade from the original (and I REALLY LIKE the original!). No wasted space, better flow, and it has way more heart and humor. More to come.

Honkai writer Shaoji asked Nasu about a DDD sequel in which Nasu replied perhaps in a parallel world because he has too much on his plate. He instead used concepts planned for DDD in FGO. For example, Beast IV's "Comparison" ability was originally DDD's Kanata Ishizue's.
