#TheCampfire yesterday was the 9 month anniversary of hubby’s stroke, but it also marked something else personal for me. I did 30 pushups yesterday, for the first time in 9 months! (See alt for more)

Before hubby’s stroke, I was walking about 15-20 miles a week and doing strength training twice weekly, regularly and almost religiously. Then life became daily visits to the hospital, then daily visits to the rehab center, and then 4x weekly outpatient visits.

Strength training got sidelined, and walks became shorter and less frequent. When I had to choose between walking and weight training, walking always won. Walking clears my head and it’s my best kind of stress relief.

But the strength training was never too far from my mind. Maybe I did it 3x a month for those first few months. Sometime in the Spring, once we were getting used to our new “normal” I started to do the strength training each week, or almost weekly.

Outpatient PT and OT ended a month ago, so for the month of July I focused on getting back into the fitness groove. It was hard at times, summers in NC are hot for outdoor exercising, and I don’t love doing pushups or lunges, the other weight training exercises are okay. But I stuck with it, and managed to do the strength training twice weekly or every 4 - 5 days. Yesterday was the first time I did 2 sets of 15 pushups since last October and it felt awesome! I killed it on my most hated exercise!

Walking is back up to about 15 - 16 miles a week, so far. Once it is less hot it will be closer to 20 miles/week, hopefully.

‎Saturday, Sunday… flew to Fukuoka with my daughters.
‎Talked to someone from Kumamoto last Thursday. My eldest daughter overheard and just said:
‎"Dad. Let's do this."
‎That was it. That's what got things moving.
‎Her friends and some of my old coworkers pulled strings, made calls, made it happen.
‎Things people in Kumamoto took for granted until yesterday — just gone now. That thought got heavier every single day.
‎Then a typhoon showed up too.
‎Why does nature have to pile on?
‎Somehow, still on schedule — we got the supplies to Fukuoka.
‎Thank you to everyone who helped.
‎Don't forget them.
‎We're with Kumamoto.
