Briar Maxton is the overworked owner of the pottery studio cheekily named “The Local Bakery.” She’s poured everything into her business, and dating is the last thing on her to-do list. But since Milo paid for two spots in class and only brought one broken heart, Briar offers a set of private bonus lessons to offset the cost.

When Milo unexpectedly becomes the roommate of Briar’s cantankerous Papaw Melvin, their worlds collide outside the studio too. Milo shows Briar there’s life beyond work, while Briar reminds Milo he’s worth more than the relationship he lost.

Text: THE PITCH. Father Matthias, an 18th century Bavarian priest, has served six months at St. Florian’s parish. He speaks Mass, prays the Divine Office, and swings a scythe for the wheat harvest. Then a being called Ruin appears beside a stream. They come with plums, a pulse, and a name he’s never known: Mattie.

Over a summer, Matthias falls into a love his theology says should destroy him. It doesn’t. Each day he rises again, un-smote, with a faith expanded beyond the Church’s borders. He blesses with tenderness, teaches his acolyte to throw a punch, and finally grieves his mother with Ruin holding him up. Yet Ruin’s gifts come at a cost, a system of balance with debts known too late to change. When the bishop visits for the exaltation of the cross, Matthias must decide if the God he serves has mercy for all he’s become—carnal, sold under sin.

God created a world of balance. To each their opposite. Yet, I do not know what opposes you." It was this that nagged him most. Not how Ruin came to be, nor what they fully were, but how they fit in the Lord's careful line of creation. For man, there was women. The night, its day. Fish below, and birds above.

Ruin bent at the waist to peek from the foliage, searching the sky. Elbowing his side, they encouraged him to do the same. He obeyed, but with a grumble. He had to duck far lower than they.

Ruin pointed. "Look, Mattie, do you see it there?"

Thin puffs of clouds, a bird —he squinted—sun. "I do not-"

"The moon —there, held beside the sun."

And it was. As it was on other days and at other times, like a white shadow against the blue sky. He straightened them both, sighing as he rested again. “Both can exist at once: sun and moon. They still oppose.”

Ruin huffed and pinched his arm. He grunted as they pushed off his chest, springing upward. A wide smile crinkled their eyes. "At what time do you speak Vespers?"

"Twilight. Always."

"Yes!" They tapped their collarbone. "That's me, Mattie."

He pulled them back against him. "Twilight has an opposite-dawn."

Another pinch. "I'm that, too, Mattie. Twilight and dawn. The thresholds. Neither day, nor night."

"Nor less than angels."

Ruin pressed their lips to his palm. "No, neither that."

Neither, nor. Both, and. The dayspring and the twilight. The in-betweens of his life. The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof.
Surely that had considered it all. Chickens didn't fly-Patience rarely laid an egg—a bird it still was.

He spoke softly, "You are not what I thought you were."

“Gladly.” Jayro opened the channel on his wrist communicator.
“Yeah?” Fish’s voice responded.
“The new navigator is having trouble with her—” Jayro broke off as Anora grabbed his forearm and yanked his wrist in front of her own face, causing his chair to whirl towards her.
“What on-boards are your pre-sets accounting for?” she asked into the communicator without a glance at him.
“The hyrdobeacon,” crackled Fish’s reply, “the fore and aft isotrope routers…and the gravitic drive buffer, I think.”
Jayro was frozen as Anora swiped at the nav one-handed. He could feel her warm breath on his palm as she spoke with Fish through his communicator, her hand gripping his forearm almost burning him through his flight jacket. She was close enough to smell the blaster emissions wafting off her, the sharp, citrus scent of the steam bath clinging to her skin. His fingertips were millimeters from her cheek and he wanted to cup her face in his hand and drag her around to look at him with those bright eyes. He wanted to play with the flyaway bit of hair that had missed her ponytail and brush his thumb over her lips until they parted.

The young woman spoke with such bright reverence as if life was a fairy tale and magic was all they needed for a happy ending. It was as if she couldn’t see the shadows approaching her. The inevitable death.
