Getting an autism diagnosis later in life feels like finally getting the IKEA instructions after years of building your life on shame and guesswork. 🪑 For years, I thought I was difficult, too sensitive, bad at socialising and strangely exhausted by things everyone else found easy. I didn’t think I was trying hard enough. Then the diagnosis comes and people expect a neat, tidy moment of relief. And it is—but it also isn’t. Because it doesn’t just explain who you are now. It takes you back through your memories, looking at everything again: the friendships that went wrong, the jobs that burnt you out, the school reports that said ‘bright, but…’, the parties where you hid in the kitchen pretending to be fascinated by crisps. Slowly, you realise you weren’t broken—you were trying to be someone you were never built to be. And with that comes grief. For the support you never got. For the years you spent blaming yourself. For every ‘why can everyone else do this so easily?’ Then there’s masking, which doesn’t just stop overnight. If you’ve spent a lifetime copying people and acting fine when you’re not fine, that admin sticks around—and honestly, it may never be fully done. For me, it’s been both a relief and a total emotional rollercoaster. If you’re somewhere in that mess too, you’re not alone. 💛 #ActuallyAutistic #LateDiagnosedAutistic #AutisticAdults #Neurodivergent #Masking
