doctor viktor holds jayce's notes by his chest, looking apprehensive. he says- 5 years ago, the council ordered the destruction of your research. but i stole this journal for myself. Even though i was aware of... the risk.. i found it a worthy cause. your dream. jayce tsks at his words and turns his face away, his mop of messy hair obstructing his eyes. embarrassed, viktor's voice wavers. he neglected practicing this speech despite how much time he had to prepare. he keeps speaking: the study of magic to help others. a power... accessible to all, regardless of, of, your status, or ability... and a demonstration of how a lifetime of research can be erased in the blink of an eye. i found this not only cruel, but wasteful. It disgusted me. Panel 3, viktor's words float above a brightly burning pyre composed of jayce's prototypes, study books & experiments. viktor's grip on the journal tightens. his emotions towards it are tender. he says; ever since that day, i decided to change. i understood one must be prepared to fight for that which they believe in. by whatever means at their disposal. I kept it safe in the hopes i could return it to you somed-- suddenly, viktor is interrupted by jayce's voice. No thank you. viktor's composure shatters. eh? he asks, confused. I said, no thank you, i'm good, jayce repeats. he's an unmoving figure in the distance. he leans forward, and the hair moves out of the way of his left eye, exposing a very tired face. Jayce's hoarse voice. My mother is coming to visit me this week. that's what matters to me. I would hate to see her wasting her time getting through inspection just to find out I'm being disciplined. i've changed. I dont want any trouble. you can tell them that. tell them who? v cuts in. Your superiors, jayce replies looking away. I'm good with faces. you're heimerdinger's paperboy. even i remember that. paperboy?! v gasps. a mental knife stabs him in the head. no you've got it wrong, i mean, that was a long time ago! not anymor…

He sits on the doctor's chair, slouching, head tipped backwards. thats it? viktor thinks. no tearful reunion. he hardly even blinked. nothing i said matters. jayce is sleeping on the other side of the medical curtain, not aware of this. panel 2. viktor deep in thought. he thinks i work for heimer? hm. fuck. maybe he's right to be wary of me. do i simply give up? panel 3; a miniature jayce sporting angel wings and a halo jumps out of viktor's head, dissipating his monologue. NO WAY! he scolds. panel 4. acting like viktor's conscience, shoulder angel jayce points a big finger at the viewer, fired up. DID I GIVE UP THE FIRST TIME MY IDEAS WERE REJECTED? NO! OR THE SECOND? NO! OR THE 15TH... NO!!!! I WORKED HARDER I POLISHED MY ARGUMENTS! THEY HAD TO LOCK ME IN A CELL TO GET RID OF ME!! panel 5. shoulder angel jayce becomes a little mote of light. A MAN'S DREAMS ONLY DIE WHEN HIS SPIRIT IS CRUSHED! he insists. shortly after that, viktor breaches his head into the curtain, peeking into the patient area. jayce is covered up on the bed and faces away from him. I have some, ah, samples. of corrections i did. viktor mutters. Your theory was solid. but your math was inexact. the silence stretches out, and viktor keeps talking. you don't need to utter a word. I'll show you anyway. he tells jayce, trying to be reassuring. end page.

Jayce thinks viktor often sleeps in the lab due to being a workaholic, but thats only half the truth. The other half is that sometimes viktor needs to fall asleep surrounded by their work, surrounded by the evidence of Jayce’s presence, and pretend that this is their shared home. just for the night.
