ao3 has protection against basic data scraping which is used to train AI, taking works offsite exposes them to that risk also, a lot of these fics may have been only accessible for registered users on ao3 and sharing it is going against the author's express wish that the work only be read on ao3

This is an extremely good point. Nothing wrong with uploading your own fics or sharing things privately amongst friends. But don’t reupload work that isn’t yours publicly. Even with the best intentions, it’s not yours to do whatever with. #ao3

From 24×81 on tumblr: guys. don't upload fics that aren't yours to a temporary website just because you need to read it on something that looks like ao3. i shouldn't even have to explain it. people are sharing massive folders of downloaded fic amongst fandoms, probably more than enough to last 4 weeks if it gets that bad. taking that work and uploading it somewhere else without the authors permission is gross. don't go signing up to a website that you don't even know who's running it and leaving kudos and comments there.
