In 1927, the Beards published The Rise of American Civilization, which presents American history as a living social evolution rather than a list of presidential terms and military battles. It became the standard university textbook of its time, but most academic journals only credited Charles. /7

When the Beards published their monumental two-volume textbook, it became an instant bestseller and a lightning rod for academic debate. Despite being a sweeping 900+-page overview of the nation’s past, the book resonated with a 1920s public craving a critical, unvarnished look at American history. The Beards’ “New History” model was built on economic determinism and class conflict. They viewed American milestones as clashes between competing economic classes. “Conservative” critics and traditional historians attacked the book. They argued that by viewing history strictly through a lens of economic self-interest and property motives, the Beards were erasing American patriotism and the high-minded ideals of the Founding Fathers.

Beard’s solo masterpiece, Woman as Force in History (1946), is a data-driven attack on the “myth of subjection” — the widely accepted belief that women had been passive, powerless victims until modern feminists arrived to save them. It laid the intellectual foundation for modern women’s history. /9

Mary Ritter Beard. During the late 1960s and 1970s, the Second-Wave Feminist Movement rediscovered Beard, transforming her into an intellectual matriarch for the emerging field of Women’s Studies. Second-wave feminist historians who were trying to build a new academic discipline from scratch looked to Mary’s writings as their blueprint. They also engaged in fierce intellectual debates over her central theory: that women had always been a powerful, active “force” in history rather than passive victims of oppression. Some radical 1970s feminists argued that Beard downplayed the brutal reality of patriarchy. They felt her rejection of the “oppression narrative” made it harder to argue for modern liberation. Other feminist scholars defended her. They argued that if feminists viewed women’s past only through the lens of victimhood, they were reinforcing the patriarchal idea that women had never accomplished anything of value.
