Stanimir Dobrev@delfoo.bsky.social · 3h agoI think folks don't quite get what Ukraine is removing from the equation when it comes to their strikes on Wildberries. Wildberies is an online marketplace that focuses on fulfillment by the organization. They have warehouses first, sorting centers second.
Ozon and Wildberries have metastasized to the Russian retail market with their over 40% base commissions and over 60% commissions when you add other fees. And now they are taking vast chunks of it with them. Entire clothing lines and collections have disappeared.
The growth spree you have to understand was on another level with dozens of 100 000+ square meter warehouses sprawling up all over Russia in less than 5 years all to facilitate this goal of being everything to Russian non groceries retail. This takes debt. Tens of billions of it.
You can't compare it to Nova Poshta because they don't play the same game. Nova Poshta does deliveries only. Wildberries does maybe less than 5% of Russia's GDP in GMV but far far above 10% of retail once you remove groceries from the statistics.
UA is erasing trillions of rubles in value for the Ru e-commerce market. This is very bad for a market that relies on constant turnover of goods. If you take out a courier service's package, that's already sold, the seller loses nothing. Not the same with Wildberies's model.
What you can't replace easily is 6 months of your inventory. And the place where you could at limited costs store ready to ship 6 MONTHS of your inventory. For some businesses that's their entire sales horizon, that's also their savings or their entire credit line locked in goods.
They are removing Wildberies' storage that holds from a few weeks to a several months of the inventory of every business in Russia. You can repair a sorting center, you can distribute a sorting center it's been done all over the world, disaster recovery is a thing.
I think folks don't quite get what Ukraine is removing from the equation when it comes to their strikes on Wildberries. Wildberies is an online marketplace that focuses on fulfillment by the organization. They have warehouses first, sorting centers second.
And the final cherry on top, safety. There was a lack of proper evacuation signs and fire drills, no fire extinguishers for use by the staff and no first aid kit with the facility having to rely on the nearby town for emergency services.
The list of problems continue with Wildberries' favorite tactic arbitrary fines on everyone who was working at the facility without much explanation or evidence and shoddy contracts for employees that skirt what's legal even under Russian labor law.
Drinking water wasn't readily available at the facility, toilets weren't easily accessible, bottles filled with urine were a common sight. You paid extra for bland store bought food as the company prevented you from bringing food with you.
Local reporting paints the facility as a terrible place to work at. Close to prison like conditions, being forced to strip almost naked before starting work every shift to be examined for stolen goods by the guard via camera. Strip searches when leaving shifts were also common.
Updated infographic. Added the facility in Tula with 194 000 square meter even though initial reporting said they would build 300 000 square meters. They had the remainder of the property left for development. 22 billion in investment and 15 000 jobs.
