Last night, Israeli military stopped the Freedom Flotilla. The costs of this operation, whose sole purpose was to continue the genocide in Gaza, shows the priorities of the Israeli government and of the world.

Of course military spending is not a good way to spend the money of tax payers. But at least it creates jobs, right? Well, yes, but way less than investments in other, more useful areas, as the recent UN study highlights:

The UN Report on increasing global military spending points out the problem: $2.7 Trillion, the same as the GDP of all countries in Africa, are being spent on tanks, war planes, missiles, guns etc in 2024 alone.

There is always money when it comes to weapons. But when it comes to overcome crises or people’s well-being, education, health care, or housing, suddenly we hear the word “austerity.” It is time to ask: what does real security mean? Missiles and tanks, or dignity and safety for all?

Labour’s “defense-led growth” isn’t about protecting Ukrainians. It’s about subsidizing BAE Systems & friends. A war economy doesn’t build security; it builds dependence on permanent conflict.
