1Day Sooner

@1daysooner.bsky.social

1Day Sooner leads campaigns in science, policy, and bioethics to stop the world’s most harmful infectious diseases. We advocate for volunteers who participate in high-impact medical studies, including human challenge studies. www.1daysooner.org

Trials We Love! What's happening? Merck's Phase 3 trial is enrolling young women in Kenya, South Africa, and Uganda to test whether a pill taken just once a month can prevent HIV as well as, or better than, today's daily PrEP.

Registration is live (both for in-person and virtual attendance) for Global Harmonization for Data Access & Exchange. @1daysooner.bsky.social supported the planning of this event, which is being hosted by the Reagan-Udall Foundation for the FDA: reaganudall.org/news-and-eve...

"The $500,000 grant to 1Day Sooner will help the group prove it can obtain the data troves of bankrupt companies, says the organization’s president and cofounder, Josh Morrison. He thinks nonexclusive copies of company datasets could be acquired for only “a few tens of thousands of dollars” each."

Tabitha Kisakye was a public health student in Uganda when she learned researchers needed healthy volunteers for a schistosomiasis study — people willing to be deliberately infected. She weighed the risks, then enrolled.

On August 14, 1Day Sooner and The Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (www.mlw.mw) welcomed 50 clinical trial volunteers, research teams, and public officials to Blantyre, Malawi to celebrate healthy volunteers and recognize their contributions to clinical research.

Clinical trials are changing—and implementation will matter. On July 2, 1Day Sooner convened a closed-door roundtable with experts from academia, industry, and advocacy to discuss HHS’s Operation TrialBlazer, draft guidance, and pilot initiatives.

Trials We Love! What's happening? Researchers are using a carefully controlled dengue human challenge model in healthy adult volunteers to study how the virus interacts with the human immune system.

On July 30, 1Day Sooner's Participant Council met for a focus session on participant compensation — what makes it fair and how it should be calculated. The summary notes are now public. A few takeaways 🧵

Next in our Meet the Team series: Zacharia Kafuko. Before leading 1Day Africa Zach was a biochemist in Seychelles. Early in the pandemic he read a BBC article calling for human challenge trial volunteers and that set him on the path to 1Day Sooner.

Controlled human infection (CHI) trials deliberately expose healthy volunteers to a pathogen. After surveying 70 CHI and 98 phase I participants to see what drives them, this study found that CHI volunteers are motivated more by altruism than by reimbursement.

Meet Elizabeth Rouha. She volunteered for a first-of-its-kind C. difficile challenge study in Leiden — and walked away with something she didn't expect: a sense that research participation can be collaborative, even empowering, rather than intimidating.

Trials We Love! What’s happening? Researchers tested an investigational EBV vaccine in healthy adult volunteers for the first time, finding it was generally well tolerated and triggered strong immune responses.

It's time for more Trials We Love! What's happening? A clinical trial in Melbourne is testing an mRNA vaccine designed to help the immune system fight Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), a virus that infects over 90% of adults worldwide.

Americans spend 90% of their time indoors, breathing air that's often dirtier than what's outside. The hidden cost? Asthma, COPD, heart disease, and costly outbreaks of disease.
