Paper maps are great. Never run out of juice, let you see the close up detail and the big picture at the same time (because they're three feet wide, unlike your phone), and the more you use them the more you learn your way around without them, unlike obeying a machine.

This captures two of my big beefs with AI: (1) Writing is thinking. If you use AI to write, you are foreclosing your own thinking. (2) Sucking at something is the first step to getting better at something. The practice is the work. AI will only help you suck in a different and more depressing way.

I can write good abstracts not because I have a natural talent for it but because I have spent twenty years consciously practicing it. The only way to get good at something is to keep working through the part where you're not good at it … yet. cf. james.grimmelmann.net/files/advice...

Do the Thing The Malcolm Gladwell version of the 10,000-Hour Rule is a myth, but the underlying idea is obviously true. You get better at things by doing them, so do the things you want to get better at. If you want to be a better reader, read. If you want to be a better writer, write. If you want to be a better public speaker, speak in public. A few corollaries are less obvious. The first is the sports aphorism to practice like you play. If you spend your time doing something that is somewhat but not really like the skill you want to develop, you will end up with that and not with what you wanted. If you write small, incremental papers because anything more ambitious feels like too much of a risk, you will only get good at writing small, incremental papers. If you take shortcuts and read in a hurry, you will get good at taking shortcuts and reading in a hurry. You have to do the thing itself. The second is to embrace failure. Don’t expect to be good when you start doing something new. Do it anyway. Think of yourself as a beginning musician playing notes to see how they sound together, or a beginning artist mixing paints to see what colors result. Create things purely for yourself. Fail fast and fail often. Love your mistakes, and learn from them. Make a mess, clean it up! The only way out is through.

Statistics can leave out what's most important. Traffic casualties are easy to measure. But even while no one in the neighborhood is bleeding, "Parents don't let their kids play outside" constitutes 24/7/365 damage to everyone's well being. No dollar figure or statistic reflects that so 🤷‍♀️.

American traffic "engineers" would learn more from walking and biking to get a sense of how safe streets feel, than looking at statistics. If everyone else avoids a street because drivers are overwhelmingly dangerous, and thereby avoids being hit, that does not make it safe.

The drama, stress and especially expense of snowstorms are mostly on account of motor vehicles. Imagine how cheap and prompt cleanup could be if only sidewalks had to be done. Inexcusable that the city's efforts always worsen access for people who do not own a car yet pay no less in taxes.

Stormwater treatment would be a much smaller problem if not for excessive space devoted to cars. It's one of many cost burdens conveniently omitted from our deliberately obscure accounting of what actually gets spent to provide "Freeways" and "Free parking."

We are expected to accept death and injury on our streets, parents afraid to let children walk or bike in their neighborhood, as if the the only alternative was an utterly unrealistic ban on cars. That is a straw man. They die because cars go over twice as fast as anything else in the city.
