This morning at 10:00 Oversight will mark up a bill introduced by Chairman Comer intended to constrain DC's ability to raise taxes, but was so badly drafted that it would also prevent DC from cutting taxes without congressional approval. Watch: bit.ly/4yAqVXI

Please don't cite "The Founders" when making arguments about democracy. Look, they created this country's democratic system which was groundbreaking for its time in world history. They also only allowed white male property owners over the age of 21 to vote.

The mayor, Council, and Home Rule itself could be repealed by Congress where we have no voting representation. Local laws can be and have been overturned by Congress. We DO NOT have voting representation in Congress for the FEDERAL taxes we pay and we pay more federal taxes than at least 22 states.

Here’s the thing, there’s a process to becoming a state. DC has followed that process & we are seeking admission to the union. If the people of Orlando want to become a state, they should follow the constitutional process too. Might work, might not.

When we achieve statehood, our state will be named after this humanitarian, suffragist, abolitionist, & equal rights champion: Douglass Commonwealth. #DCStatehood

Frederick Douglass died #otd in 1895, at his home in Washington DC. Just a few hours earlier, he attended the meeting of the National Council of Women - another reminder that he remained broadly committed to equal rights, until literally his dying day.

NEWS: The U.S. Senate has given initial approval to the Republican resolution repealing D.C.'s tax-decoupling bill. The vote was 51-46, fully along party lines. (Deleted last tweet that said it was the final vote. That is likely to happen tomorrow. Apologies.)

The U.S. Senate has started debating the Republican resolution that would repeal the tax bill passed by the D.C. Council late last year to decouple the city's tax code from certain federal provisions.

Please call these GOP Sens & tell them to respect local control over local affairs!!! #FreeDC #DCStatehood Lisa Murkowski (AK) 202-224-6665 Thom Tillis (NC) 202-224-6342 Dan Sullivan (AK) 202-224-3004 Dave McCormick (PA) 202-224-6324 Bill Cassidy (LA) 202-224-5824 Susan Collins (ME) 202-224-2523

A Senate committee just approved the resolution that would repeal a D.C. tax bill, sending the measure to the Senate floor. It will get a full vote in the House today.

Congressional Republicans, who barred D.C. from spending $1B of its own revenue in its 2025 budget, are moving to block another D.C. law. This action poses risks to D.C.'s public services & credit rating & could create filing chaos as tax season begins. www.cbpp.org/blog/congres...
