The 42nd Traditional Kaga Yuzen Crafts ExhibitionVisiting Dress “Plum Scent” exhibited by a member, Ichiro Kakimoto Artist’s Comment : I tried to express the strength of the intersecting branches and the old tree with moss that bends vigorously.

Exhibited at the 42nd Traditional Kaga Yūzen Crafts Exhibition, Plum Scent (Ume no Ka) by master craftsman Ichirō Kakimoto (柿本市郎) is a magnificent visiting dress (hōmongi) that perfectly exemplifies the painterly realism and refined technical mastery of Kanazawa’s Kaga Yūzen tradition. Fulfilling Kakimoto’s intention to capture the strength and vitality of an old tree, thick, lichen-dusted limbs twist forcefully upward across the back seams, branching out into a delicate lattice of dark, sharp twigs that reach the shoulders and upper sleeves to frame a dense canopy of pale plum blossoms (ume) at the neck. Unlike Kyoto's Kyō-yūzen, which frequently relies on metallic leafing and embroidery, this piece celebrates pure hand-painting with rice-paste resist (itoshinori). It features quintessential Kaga hallmarks, including kaga-goki (outside-in petal shading) and precise naturalistic details in the moss-draped bark and budding flowers. Set against a pale blush-white ground that gently deepens into a rich mauve-lavender at the hem (suso-boke), the composition achieves a grounded, sophisticated harmony between structural force and delicate botanical beauty.

Designed by legendary Japanese fashion designer Yukiko Hanai (花井幸子) for her Spring/Summer 2012 collection in Tokyo, this breathtaking kuro-furisode (black long-sleeved formal kimono) offers a masterful celebration of traditional high-craft textiles reimagined for the modern runway.

Captured from behind with arms outstretched to reveal the dramatic, sweeping span of the sleeves (furi), the garment features a rich, dark espresso ground adorned with an opulent, cascading arrangement of seasonal flora. Executed through meticulously detailed embroidery and Yūzen dyeing, trailing clusters of white and gold wisteria (fuji) interweave with autumn maple leaves (momiji), full-bloomed chrysanthemums (kiku), and dramatic peonies (botan) in shades of cream, rust, and burnt ochre, anchored by shimmering metallic foil dusting along the hem. The ensemble is anchored by a striking, high-contrast obi woven in a bold ichimatsu (checkerboard) pattern of metallic gold and black, tied into a voluminous, architectural back-knot. By combining the rigorous proportions of classical kitsuke with haute-couture theatricality, Hanai honors centuries of Japanese dress tradition while showcasing its timeless dynamism on the global fashion stage.
