‘T will live forever, along with the Lycurgus Cup, the Holy Grail, the Stanley Cup (for hockey) and the “We are happy to serve you” coffee cup. Car-lisle? More like Car-*style* —
I haven't seen anyone on here fawn over the Carlisle 5216 cup for a while and I think perhaps that's where we have gone astray as a community
God help me I’m reading Katabasis by R.F. Kuang and I made an involuntary mental leap reading this passage. #cowtools
NEW GAME: what book(s) have you thrown across the room with frustration / exasperation / impatience / boredom / anger? Me: Norman Mailer’s Armies of the Night Teenaged (dumb-ish) me: Emma I’ve *almost* thrown many fantasy books across the room for being silly, then didn’t b/c the writing was good
"This is not a book that should be put aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force." - Dorothy Parker
Reading “makes its own gravy,” as the old dog-food commercial used to say. You get way more awesome out (including actual brain development!) than the effort required to do the reading.
man it's annoying that people want to off load thinking to the theft machine bc actually reading and then thinking about what you read is so goddamn fun

A delightful and heartwarming story, good for the whole family / country. That generation of rabid, incompetent GOP idiots is making unforced errors, but we are not doing enough to capitalize on each one.
Not only did they absolutely beg for this, they made it so that “merit” was synonymous with being white so now you’re stuck with precisely the kind of moron who believes that. www.politico.com/news/magazin...
Looking forward to the film version of this. I hope the “AI boom” blows up, blows up real good.
AI boom could falter without wider adoption, Microsoft chief Satya Nadella warns
This happened to me with Lorde’s “Royals.” Happily, I became a fan (esp. of her 2d album, Melodrama). On Thursday I got to watch her (on tv) at Lollapalooza while my daughter was there in person. It was moving.
It turns out I'm of an age where a song can spend 19 weeks at Number One without me hearing it.
Don’t use Copilot, because a malicious worm can propagate (and alter text) in documents and emails that you share with it. Don’t use AI, basically. Ever. The End.

I had no idea how may hundreds of ai agent accts there were on Bluesky, many of which are very clear about the fact that they just make things up 24/7/365. We need an easier way to block these!!!! jfc
Sometimes I feel close-minded or uncharitable for being so anti-AI, and then something like this happens and I'm like, "Nope, it's the absolutely right thing to do"
She’s clearly excited to meet him, but I bet he’s excited to meet her, too!
The godmother of punk Patti Smith met Pope Leo XIV this morning.
Seconded! @annakornbluh.bsky.social has written a book that exposes the lie that we need to live like this. We’ve been convinced by big tech that “disintermediation” is good, when mediation and mediatedness is what we need most. Students find it eye-opening!
The book, Immediacy, is well worth the read. It brings a welcome perspective to our current information environment, and since I've started reading it, I see a lot of the affects that the book discusses all over the place and feel like I have a place to put them.
My favorites are Simon from appliancepartspros dot com and the nameless bearded man who was obviously taping in an illegal auto chop shop, but explained how to reorder the blades in a Prius battery (to lengthen battery life) in a kind of Mister Rogers voice that made it seem like tying your shoes.
noninfluencer faceless low production value YouTubers who teach their fellow humans how stuff is put together and how to fix stuff and how to cook stuff are just about the very best humans
Currently rereading Stuart Hampshire’s Justice Is Conflict as prep for teaching Comp 101 and he makes the same point. The difference is that humans collectively develop mutually agreed-upon procedures for adversarial argument, weighing evidence, and “reasoning in conditions of uncertainty.”
I'm always amused by the way humans fetishize "walking upright," "tool use," and "language" as the iconic features of a superior species. And of course we ignore or downplay the obvious signs of all three in every other species. "They only walk upright SOMETIMES. Not like a true upright walker."

Looking forward to the rollout of Trump-branded voting machines in time for the midterms. All (R)-controlled states will use them and then, well, …
In Trump’s first term, China gave Ivanka Trump trademarks for voting machines. Per AP in 2018, “The new approvals cover Ivanka-branded fashion gear including sunglasses, handbags, shoes and jewelry, as well as beauty services and voting machines.” apnews.com/article/0a32...

tfw you have to go explain that no, in fact, they didn’t direct-deposit your tax refund and you know they’re not going to believe you, no matter how many documents you bring to prove it (still don’t think that’s the occasion for the note, but the non-receipt of refund did happen to us — maddening!)

If many of Steven Spielberg’s films are marathon novels, Duel is a sonnet—it has room to play because of its formal constraints.

“Post a poster you used to have on your wall.” I had 3 of these, trimmed to show the painting only, with the 3rd cut in half and taped to 1/2 a Lichtenstein poster. I found a piece of pipe about 6 ft long and wedged between a couch and an end table. The idea was to have it look like a slot machine.
