Rivers and streams each help remove excess nitrogen from surface waters, but there are important differences between them. New research by @abagaelpruitt.bsky.social, @ajreisinger.bsky.social, and coauthors in new @jgrbiogeo.bsky.social research.
Denitrification Looks Different in Rivers Versus Streams - Eos
A study directly comparing waterways of different sizes revealed important differences in nitrogen dynamics across seasons.

The Arctic is warming, rivers are turning orange & the marine ecosystem is rapidly changing, according to the 2025 Arctic Report Card, in which #UCDavis wrote about Alaska’s rusting rivers. Postdoctoral researcher Abagael Pruitt shared her insights on a #NOAA panel. www.ucdavis.edu/climate/blog...
This year's Arctic Report Card from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration finds that the northernmost part of the Earth is warming faster than the global average, leading to melting glaciers, shifting fish populations, and rivers running orange. n.pr/4rYZwLP
New report finds the Arctic continues to warm faster than the planet as a whole

Check out our new paper, led by @abagaelpruitt.bsky.social, quantifying whole stream/river denitrification rates in an ag river and its tributary across seasons. Abagael did a great job leading this work and its a really great application of the open-channel N2 method! dx.doi.org/10.1029/2025...

We conditioned these handy recirculating mesocosms (at #NotreDame) under a range of temperatures. Then we added #eDNA from from two fish species and and took H2O samples over time to measure removal rates for different eDNA sizes. SO to @abagaelpruitt.bsky.social letting me use her experiment setup!
New paper out today!! We know warming speeds up eDNA removal in lakes and ponds, but what about streams and rivers where physical removal may obscure the impact of decay? onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
Warming Increases Environmental DNA (eDNA) Removal Rates in Flowing Waters
This study experimentally investigated how warmer water temperatures impact eDNA removal rates in flowing waters. Using recirculating mesocosms with varying water temperatures (20°C, 23°C, and 26°C) ...

Congratulations to Dr. Amy Burgin (@burginam.bsky.social), our 2025 Leadership Award recipient! Dr. Burgin received this Career Award for her extraordinary work in furthering SFS' mission. freshwater-science.org/2025-leaders... We look forward to celebrating with you at #2025SFS!
I passed! I’m so grateful for all the support :) Dr. Pruitt sounds pretty cool!
I’m defending next Thursday (March 27, 9am ET)! If you want the zoom link, let me know!
The abstract submission deadline for #SFS2025 has been extended to February 2nd at 11:59 PM EST. Endowment award applications are still due this Sunday the 26th at 11:59 PM EST. 🎉

She first got involved with SFS as an undergraduate at The University of Kansas when she attended SFS 2019 in Salt Lake City. Her favorite part of her program is being able to travel for conferences and research. Here is a photo of her two cats, Dr. Meowstus and William’s Original Chili Seasoning.
Our Board of Directors representative is @abagaelpruitt.bsky.social, a 5th year Ph.D. candidate at The University of Notre Dame. Her research focuses on quantifying the impact of changes in organic matter and nutrient inputs on stream ecosystem function using experimental and monitoring approaches.
The endowment award applications are open for 2025!! There are endowment awards available for both undergraduate and graduate students! There are named awards and general endowment awards. The application criteria are described on the website: freshwater-science.org/awards-progr...
