ACLU of Missouri

The ACLU of Missouri dares to create a more perfect union — beyond one person, party, or side.

Today, the ACLU of Missouri is in the state Supreme Court defending a lower court's ruling blocking the enforcement of a government censorship that led to hundreds of books being removed from school libraries across Missouri.

Yesterday, the ACLU of Missouri, the ACLU Voting Rights Project, and the Campaign Legal Center filed an amicus brief in Hoskins v. Von Glahn, urging the U.S. Supreme Court to reject a last-minute effort by the Missouri Secretary of State to reinstate an unlawful gerrymandered congressional map.

“Throughout this process, politicians neglected every path to provide Missourians with clarity and resolution, instead choosing intentional and unnecessary delay as their tactic to force an illegal map to thumb the scale of partisanship.” -Gillian Wilcox, Director of Litigation and Policy for the ACLU of Missouri

Since 2020, 27 states have banned transgender youth from playing school sports. Many of these bans allow for invasive forms of sex testing putting all female student-athletes at risk and emboldening intrusive challenges to student-athletes' sex.

Missourians are free to once again access medication abortion in their home state. A recent ruling affirms the preliminary injunctions, allowing procedural abortion to continue, and making medication abortion available for the first time since 2018.

Two months after the Civil War officially ended, historians say Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to tell more than 250,000 enslaved people that they were free. We celebrate Juneteenth to commemorate the 1865 emancipation of enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas.

Juneteenth is a reminder that our freedom is the result of constant action, not coincidence.

While HB1663 targets trans people, it will harm all women and girls by enabling any school official to question & harass young women who participate in school sports. The law would invite gross scrutiny & harassment of all young women and girls and set a dangerous precedent for state overreach.

Our voices could be the difference in expanding rights or protecting Missourians from harmful bans. Democracy requires action, and our power is stronger together in community. Join us Wednesday, April 29 for our monthly People's Briefing. Link in comments.
