Britain has entered a new climate reality, and the Government hasn't grasped it. Last week I led a debate on extreme heat and the cross-government action needed to protect us. Here's some of what I said.

It's infuriating that large parts of SW1 still don't grasp the scale of this crisis, still pretending adaptation can wait. The CCC has laid out exactly what well-adapted looks like. But nothing, as yet, suggests Andy Burnham takes this any more seriously than Keir Starmer did.

It's deeply irresponsible of Reform-led councils, like the one here in Suffolk, to be taking backward steps on climate and nature. Firefighters are battling extreme heat while Reform councils stick their heads in the sand to please their political donors.

The climate emergency isn't a talking point. It's happening right now. Farmers are watching harvests fail, families are facing hosepipe bans, and our infrastructure is crumbling under record heat.

Dear Cllr Hadwen, As a Member of Parliament representing a Suffolk constituency, I am very concerned to hear of your administration’s intention to rescind the Suffolk County Council Climate Emergency Declaration declared in March 2019. Undeclaring an Emergency does not remove threats from flooding or extreme heat which residents will still face and it will not, on its own, save the council any money. The extreme heat we are currently experiencing is a clear example of our climate changing, and the council must use its powers to safeguard residents who are affected by this and other extreme weather which is becoming more common. Understanding that we are facing an Emergency which threatens all aspects of the way that we live, including how our food is produced and how our economic markets can be sustained, is crucial in order to make decisions and provide services which will help the people of Suffolk live well in the coming years.

I've signed the Repair and Reuse Declaration. The UK is the second-highest producer of electronic waste per person in the world. Too many of us are stuck throwing away and rebuying electronics because they're not built to last. Repair and reuse should be easy and affordable.

This by-election is an attention-seeking attempt by Farage to evade scrutiny. We know Reform are in the pocket of big donors and they're running scared. Farage should face the music. If he truly thinks he's done nothing wrong, why not wait for the standards investigation?
