To those in Salt Lake City for #ESA2026: I’m happy to chat about research or policy developments that you think Science’s news team might want to cover. I can also talk with anyone who might want to write a personal essay for Science’s Working Life section. Feel free to DM me.

Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

It’s official: I’m joining the School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability at the University of Iowa as an assistant prof starting Fall 2026! I’ll be recruiting multiple grad students and postdocs to join my lab, so if you’re into disturbance ecology and conservation science… watch this space!

Colorado stands up for science. NCAR isn't just your weather app. It's keeping us prepared up to the MINUTE when extreme weather hits. In an emergency, preparation and information keep us safe. Without NCAR, we are flying blind, just as extreme weather becomes more frequent. #SaveNCAR

A deeply dangerous — and blatantly retaliatory action against Colorado — by the Trump administration. NCAR is one of the most renowned scientific facilities in the WORLD — where scientists perform cutting-edge research everyday. We will fight this reckless directive with every legal tool we have.

Exclusive: The Trump administration is moving to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, according to a senior White House official, taking aim at one of the world's leading climate research labs.

Unbelievable. This would be a terrible blow to American science, writ large. It would decimate not only climate research, but also the kind of weather, wildfire, and disaster research that has underpinned half a century of progress in prediction, early warning, and increased resilience.

NCAR is quite literally our global mothership. Everyone who works in climate and weather has passed through its doors and benefited from its incredible resources. Dismantling NCAR is like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet. Unbelievable.

One of the scientific puzzles I've struggled with through my career is the contrast between biophysical models of ecosystem services/nature's contributions to people and what you hear from farmers and other rural land users about how the interact with nature. - This is a thread about a new paper.

A classic winter-like "tule fog" pattern will persist for at least a few more days in CA's Central Valley (w/spillover into SF Bay), but warm, dry, and mostly sunny conditions persist above and south of the fog layer! But how about some deeper tule fog context? [Thread] #CAwx

At #SER2025 and interested in plant functional traits or urban forests? Come see my talk at 11 — 11:15 in: S.31 - Urban Ecosystem Restoration as Climate Action and Equity-Centered Community Development. I will discuss a study that quantifies differences in tree species impacts on air temperature!

The Garnet Fire has burned through a place I have worked since 2002. A place I hold dear. We knew this wasn't a matter of if, but when. Unfortunately the leadership on the Sierra National Forest didn't have the same urgency that we did. My eulogy for Teakettle. www.hurteaulab.org/blog/a-eulog...

At #ESA2025 and interested in the potential for urban forests to cool cities, and tree functional traits? Stop by my poster tomorrow (Tuesday) in PS 25-160, Urban Ecosystems. Excited to chat about our results so far, compare findings with others, and get feedback on further directions!

Job alert! Please share. We're looking for an urban ecologist (PhD) to join the research team at the Holden Arboretum. Develop an active research program while supporting stakeholders. 🌳 I'll be at #ESA2025 and happy to chat. #AltAc #HoldenScience #UrbanEcology holdenfg.org/career-and-i...
