he Middle East has become a monstrous laboratory for 21st-century warfare, where tactics tested in one targeted territory are, in the absence of an international response, later replicated on a larger scale elsewhere. This pattern is clear in how Vladimir Putin's Russia experimented with terror tactics in Syria, starting in September 2015, before deploying them against Ukraine following the full-scale invasion of February 2022.
This is also how Israel, under Benjamin Netanyahu, has subjected Lebanon to the same systematic violations of international law that have been perpetrated in the Gaza Strip since October 2023. Israel's impunity in Gaza can only encourage it to be just as ruthless in Lebanon.
The Israeli army claims a "humanitarian" approach in both Gaza and Lebanon by publicly warning civilians before bombing a given area. But these so-called "evacuation orders" are aptly named, as they essentially expel residents from the designated zone, giving them very little time to make life-or-death decisions for themselves and their loved ones, with no guarantee for the safety of any property left behind. Moreover, the evacuation routes specified by Israeli spokespeople are often unclear. In some cases they have been struck by Israeli fire themselves.
'Yellow lines' and 'orange lines'
The so-called "ceasefire" declared in Gaza on October 10, 2025, after two years of conflict, has not been more respected than the truce in Lebanon, which took effect on April 17 after 46 days of hostilities. Since the announcement of Gaza's fragile truce six months ago, at least 837 Palestinians and five Israeli soldiers have been killed there; in Lebanon, at least 465 Lebanese and two Israeli soldiers have been killed there since April 17. In both cases, Israel has allowed its military to draw a "yellow line" beyond its borders, maintaining control over more than half of the Palestinian enclave and about 6% of Lebanese territory.

These "buffer zones" have been systematically destroyed after their populations were emptied. Israeli forces have also established a deeper "orange line," up to which they can intervene at any time to strengthen the buffer zone. This "orange line" has been made in Gaza, but not in Lebanon, does not change how similar the methods of territorial control are, with a constant threat hanging over the affected populations.
According to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, three-quarters of journalists killed worldwide in 2023, two-thirds in 2024, and nearly half in 2025 were killed by the Israeli military in Gaza. Reporters Without Borders estimates that 220 journalists have been killed by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip since October 2023, of whom at least 65 were slain either due to their work or while they were working.
'International law trampled'
In Lebanon, eight journalists have been killed by the Israeli army since Hezbollah reignited fighting on March 2. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun recently accused Israel of "deliberately targeting journalists." Five hundred and eighty-nine humanitarian workers have been killed in Gaza in two and a half years, while at least 50 were killed in Lebanon in the past two months of March and April, against a backdrop of Israeli strikes on ambulances and health centers.
The vast majority of humanitarian workers killed in the Gaza Strip were working for the United Nations, whose clearly marked buildings have been bombed by the Israeli army. In Southern Lebanon, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (FINUL), has also paid a heavy price in the current conflict, with six blue helmets killed in two months, by both Israel and Hezbollah. The United Nations' inability to protect even its own personnel speaks volumes about the collapse of international law, further aggravated by the dictates of Trump and his administration, who have adopted the Israeli approach while only seeking to temper its most shocking cons.

Israeli impunity has had a devastating impact on civilians, with 1.9 million people displaced in Gaza and 1.2 million in Lebanon. Even though 90% of Gaza's population has been expelled from their homes, compared to 20% in Lebanon, Israeli "buffer zones" in both cases have made the prospect of return increasingly uncertain for the displaced. Beyond the scale of this humanitarian disaster, another parallel emerges: just as Israel's war of annihilation in the Gaza Strip has consolidated Hamas's grip on what remains of the Palestinian enclave, Hezbollah can ultimately only benefit from Israel's all-out approach. Yes, impunity comes at a price, and it is exorbitant.
