💡A rural electrification push that ended up protecting forests?🌳 New research in #JAERE finds that rural electrification in Brazil slowed deforestation by nudging farmers 👨‍🌾 away from land-intensive cattle grazing 🐄 and into more land-efficient cropping🌾 📊 #JaereTableFriday 📈 #Econsky

A 10 percentage point increase in electrification reduces the pasture share of farmland by 3.7pp 🐄⬇️, modestly increases cropland by 1.5pp 🌾⬆️, and boosts native vegetation within farms by 3.9pp 🌳⬆️ — the land-sparing pattern predicted by the authors' credit-constraint model.
