I tried HERE WeGo earlier today and found it works well for both driving and walking directions. This non-American navigation app is produced by the Dutch company HERE Technologies, is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and still displays Lake Ontario correctly. wego.here.com

Google has now renamed Lake Ontario for US users. They don’t even show the real name in brackets. I used a VPN to compare: Apple hasn’t renamed it (at least not yet), nor has Dutch service Here WeGo or OpenStreetMap. Yet another reason to ditch Google, and US tech more broadly.

Congratulations to my UofT Engineering Science classmate Craig McConnell on receiving his first Billboard #1 plaque for his work on Céline Dion's "Courage" album. You're amazing Craig!

My first professional publication, the Asimov Award winning novelette "Dedication", was about a visit by future astronauts to the Viking 1 landing site. The Viking astrobiology experiments also featured prominently in my more recent story "Hemlock on Mars" which opened the LIFE BEYOND US anthology.

The annual summer BBQ of my local chapter of #ProfessionalEngineersOntario is always terrific and today was no exception. Thank you to the chapter leadership and volunteers for a great afternoon.

It was my pleasant duty yesterday to bequeath some items from Pancake's estate to her cousins Daisy and Cleo.

My colleague Tim Heydrich presented on "Advancing Canadian Wildfire Technology Through On-Board Processing and On-the-Ground Collaboration" to kick off this morning's Advancements in Wildfire Science, Management, and Engagement session at the ISPRS 2026 conference in Toronto.

Our beloved Pancake has gone to Sto'Vo'Kor after a long and happy life of 21 years and 4 months. Her greatest gift was that she taught me every day how to find joy in simple things like a saucer of milk or a ray of sunshine or a cosy blanket or a dollop of ice cream. We will miss her terribly.

My colleague Tim Heydrich and I will be at the 25th Congress of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) next week. Tim is the lead author of our paper "Advancing Canadian Wildfire Technology Through On-Board Processing and On-the-Ground Collaboration".

It is the thirtieth anniversary of INDEPENDENCE DAY, one of my favourite fun movies. On the eve of the film's climatic final battle, the fictional President of the United States gives the speech of his life and then jumps into a fighter plane to kick some alien ass himself. No heel spurs there!
