When did you last notice ageism? From images used in the media to the phrases that we use without questioning them, we’re so surrounded by ageism that we’ve become used to it, and we don’t always notice it.

“When you look at the UK labour market, if you fall out of work & you're older, it's very hard for you to get back" says Kim. “And that is not just about your capability & what you do, it's also about the prejudice that's held in the labour market about what you can do & what you can contribute."

“I often find that people treat me very differently when I tell them how old I am, it can be very patronising”, John told us. “Since turning 70 I feel as though age is merely a number – I still feel the same as I did when I was 48! Unfortunately, this is not how other people feel."

Others assuming that you are less capable, that your opinions are less relevant, that you are too old to be interested in certain things. These are some of the ordinary and everyday assumptions that people can make of others simply because they are older.

“I’d like younger people to see older people as healthy, stroppy, vibrant...all the range of things that other ages are too. I want them to know that there’s still fun to be had, still a future. As a generation they will be living longer, and you don’t want more years to be ill or miserable!"

‘You look good for your age.’ A back-handed compliment if ever we heard one. Is looking good and looking older incompatible?? When it comes to looks, a sexist double-standard often rears its head as we age: older men are ‘distinguished’ while women with grey hair have ‘let themselves go’.

Ageism is bad for everyone. But women can face extra barriers and layers of inequality as they age when sexism combines with ageism. More than one in three (36%) women over 50 say they have been patronised because of their age.

A shocking one in three people aged over 50 believe they have been turned down for a job because of their age, despite research showing that mixed-age teams are more innovative and productive. More about the value that older workers bring > www.agewithoutlimits.org/workplace
