I’ve been living in the Bay Area for some 20 years, never lived in Brooklyn, and just randomly ran into somebody here, at a restaurant I just wandered into, I hadn’t seen or thought about in about 30 yeaes. If I’m found murdered, it’s them.

Anytime there is mass reproduction there seems an implication of replaceability — itself a sort of obsolescence. It’s not the only reason, but definitely one of them, that what pride I take in my work (not a small amount, if we’re honest) is in the trade of ideas.

Only a teensy tiny fraction of books are truly rare, unique, or scarce. But the idea that people destroy the 1,921st copy of a book no one is interested in always freaks people out. They are appalled that libraries weed books, too.

Already looking forward to my conversations in NYC bookstores this coming week that go something like: “I own East Bay Booksellers in Oakland, California.” “Never heard of it.”
