They are, of course, slasher movies, and they don’t break any new ground, but where they excel is in their suspense and incredible cinematography. The old abandoned hotel in the snow-covered mountains provides the perfect setting for a horror movie. The first film was shot on 16mm, giving it that classic filmic look, which certainly works in its favour.The performances are solid throughout, with a likeable cast. There were no soundstages or artificial snow—it was all filmed on location, with the cast and crew often braving freezing temperatures. The killer, known as the Mountain Man, is a huge, brutal force of nature and certainly not someone you’d want to cross paths with.In my opinion, Cold Prey 2 actually surpasses the first movie. It’s bigger, bloodier, and even more suspenseful. The final film in the trilogy takes place in the ‘80s and, although it doesn’t quite reach the highs of the previous two films, it’s still a fantastic entry in the franchise.All three movies were shot on film, giving them a wonderfully rough edge, especially the original, which was filmed on 16mm. These releases are a significant improvement over the previous DVD editions. The image is clear and crisp, with natural-looking colours throughout.The audio is presented in a 5.1 Norwegian track with English subtitles and sounds fantastic. It’s clear, crisp, and free of any distortion.
