Wishing you calm seas @alltooclearfilm.bsky.social! In partnership with @harknesslab.bsky.social and @lakeheaduniversity.bsky.social, we will be sinking an autonomous up-looking echosounder that will ping 24/7 to help understand the diel behaviour of fish and zoop at Sup Shoal. Be sure to tune in!

Pre-dawn departure from Duluth - steaming for 24 hours to get to the Superior Shoal. @CTVLondon picked up the story, check it out: www.ctvnews.ca/london/artic... See the Superior Shoal for yourself on the LIVEstream this Sunday 3-5pm ET. www.youtube.com/live/oKB_iw8...

Many reasons why the feds need to keep science staff. Invasive species & water know no boundaries. The quagga mussel is in at least 17 states & Canada. There needs to be strong cooperative programs & research to deal with invasives. 🌊🌊 @alltooclearfilm.bsky.social www.wpr.org/environment/...

Quadrillions of invasive mussels are damaging the Great Lakes, documentary shows

Since the late 1990s, the lake whitefish population has declined as much as 80 percent in parts of the Great Lakes. The culprit is a tiny invasive species called the quagga mussel.

The video animated from Fig 6. We found that Lake Trout are often "pack hunters", displaying coord'd attacks on Cisco schools from below. Obs attack speeds >3 m/s at 5 m from school! The #sonar tag detection tool could track the fine-scale movements of individuals and map out their prey fields.

Examples of the associations between tagged lake trout (plus signs) and cisco schools (triangles) and unknown fish
targets (circles). The arrows indicate the first observation for each time series shown; distances are relative to that observation.

This was a cool study and fun paper to write. We followed acoustically tagged lake around with a multibeam sonar to study their behaviour. Observed attacks on prey fish schools and interactions with other lake trout.

#ThrowbackThursday; this one from 2007. Tracking tagged (and untagged) Lake Trout using multibeam #sonar and 200 kHz #acoustic tags. 3D model from "Tag01" in TAFS paper by @airydunlop.bsky.social , @harknesslab.bsky.social , @echoview.bsky.social , et al. doi.org/10.1577/T08-... #hydroacoustics
