Building the pipeline that transformed Alaska took years, thousands of workers, and one of the largest labor mobilizations in state history. Pipefitters. Operating engineers. Teamsters. Electricians. Laborers. Nearly every trade had a hand in it, and every worker was union.
To kick off Labor Month, we look back at the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, one of the biggest union-built projects in state history and still shaping Alaska’s workforce today. More than just a project to move oil, TAPS moved Alaska’s labor movement forward.
