The moment tensor solution ("beach ball") for today's M5.0 quake indicates thrust motion striking NE-SW. The location, depth, and orientation place the earthquake on the Kantishna Hills Anticline, an area of active folding and thrust faulting associated with the larger Alaska Range thrust system.

It’s #FieldworkFriday! D24K on the North Slope is prone to flooding. When field team members Celia Chmielowski & Carolyn Parcheta arrived, the hut's batteries were wet and nonfunctional. The team installed a 2nd cooler for new batteries and built a wooden platform in the hut to keep batteries dry.

It's #FieldworkFriday! A bear damaged B18K: a broken door, wires ripped out, and several 75-pound batteries tossed out of the hut. “Maybe the bear found a nice, cozy den for the winter,” said field engineer Shah Khan. Khan and intern Chloe Crossen repaired the station, and it's back online!

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake south of Kasilof produced weak to moderate shaking at 5:15 pm local time. The earthquake's 35-mile depth and the type of faulting that produced the shaking indicate that the earthquake came from the subducting Pacific Plate as it descends underneath North America.
