Our samples today take a lovely diversion into the etymology of place names, and what they can tell us of the history of a place, and our map sample shows the location of the bridge in our cover photo! We also include extensive extracts of contemporary directories for the area. 👍

And now, a little Vivaldi. Michel Tirabosco, a renowned pan flute player, collaborating with Raphaël Froissart. He is a professor at the Geneva Conservatory. Born with physical differences, he began playing the pan flute at 7 and has achieved international recognition for his skill. #streetmusic

I posted this thread on 5 August last year, the anniversary of Newcomen's death. It is a fascinating piece of engineering history and heritage.

It was quite hard to chose samples for this map, David and Helene Farn did such a great job writing and researching their text! It’s also studded with local names and the wonderful story of the area up to the modern day. We have also included an extract of Kelly’s Directory 1906 with this map.

In Martin Handley’s introduction we find layers to our map. He notes that horse manure ‘piled high against the barracks windows’; quite a striking image! And aroma no doubt! But it is these kinds of added details that give us a valuable fresh(ish?!) insight into people who lived here. #YorkshireDay

For #YorkshireDay, we’re visiting #York (SE) & Heslington 1907! As this is also our weekly #CombatCartography post, we’re focussing on the Cavalry Barracks and Infantry Barracks. The first was created in response to the French Revolution while the second was added about a century later.

Our map and text sample today concern Bridge House, and briefly outlines a scandalous royal event which some may know from reading the popular Flashman series. It is a cautionary Victorian tale about the perils of gambling, especially with royalty!

From 1942 this work is one of a series by Henry Moore. It captures the dark, claustrophobic, conditions faced by miners working underground. Moore was born on 30 July 1898 in the industrial town of Castleford where his father worked at Wheldale Colliery.

To accompany an interesting and entertaining map, we have an interesting and entertaining introduction by Richard Oliver! He dashes happily through the rich #history of the area and gives you our usual run-down of transport, ecumenical and industrial development too. Well worth a look over! #Devon

#Devon is a place on Earth; Teignmouth & Shaldon 1904. Arguably (but not by me, because that conversation would go on past my bedtime) the last place in England invaded by a foreign power (the French in 1690). It is though, easily argued that this is a historically interesting and busy area!

Over time (as with many similar places in the UK) the wealthy moved out & their large houses became hotels or institutional homes, or they were demolished and new housing estates grew like mushrooms on the grounds. These old maps stand as a testament to a lost moment in time, a moment not forgotten.
