Behavioral scientist investigating what it means to be social | I work with 🐒 and 🐜 | Passionate about medical applications of ethology | UNIL🇨🇭
Amazing week at @isbe2026.bsky.social speaking in the most humongous room ever about the legacy that vervet moms leave to their sons and catching up with superstars in collective behavior from the #almadalcosummerschool2025 @marinapapa.bsky.social @angela albi @pol fernandez lopez
Fresh ant news hot off the press! 🐜 In our new paper @ebiantonygeorge.com and I combined automated behavioural tracking of 660 ants with experimental injuries and infections to find out (1) who cares for open wounds in ant societies and (2) what drives them to do so. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
Social and spatial affinity drive wound care in ants | PNAS
In social animals, open wounds pose a risk not only for the injured individual but also for its wider social context, especially when the probabili...

❤️this project and team are just incredible and I feel so lucky to be able to contribute to unraveling the many wonders of vervet societies❤️
For 30 years, the EU and South Africa have teamed up for science. At the INKAWU Vervet Project, Erica van de Waal tracks 250+ vervet monkeys, to learn how their culture helps them adapt to changing environments. @dee-unil.bsky.social #FrontierResearch
To scan or to focal? Hopefully our new paper can help you make an informed decision based on your research questions and study system. Brilliantly guided by @delphinedemoor.bsky.social and les by @alexmielke.bsky.social
New paper! We use simulations to test received wisdom on the observational sampling method to use and find that Altmann 1974 was right all along (never bet against Jeanne!). Focal follows capture rare, fleeting behaviours, scans captures long, common behaviours. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Thank you so much tor inviting me to represent @manyprimates.bsky.social at #ehbea2026. A bit intimidating but very enjoyable to give my first talk as network co-coordinator.
Great panel discussion on team science and big datasets in comparative cognition at #ehbea2026
I am looking for a postdoc to work in our long-term system of food-caching mountain chickadees in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The expected start is April 2026. Please see details here: chickadeecognition.com/positions If interested and qualified, please contact me directly (email on the website).

Grant and paper rejections on the same day should not be allowed… 🥲 but happy to back in the snowy mountains after a lovely field visit 🏔️
So great to catch up with Stef and the UVP mo keys on our way back home ♥️ thanks for having us ♥️
One last monkey morning before we fly out. Very lucky to be able to join the @urbanvervetproject.bsky.social team to visit 2 of their groups today!
On day 3 at the Inkawu vervet project our fantastic master students did some more field experiments for @rachelaharrison.bsky.social ‘s project on social tolerance which has been now going on for over 2 years!
Day 2 at the Inkawu Vervet Project was full of giraffes 🦒 and vervets munching on greens 🥬
Great first day in the field at IVP with Rachel and our wonderful master students from @dee-unil.bsky.social and @durham.ac.uk
Great first day at the Inkawu Vervet Project checking in with current studies for my @leverhulme.ac.uk early career fellowship! And a great opportunity to catch up with @albamotesr.bsky.social
Delphine’s awesome framework is out! So looking forwards to add real world data to this awesome theory ♥️congratulations my friend ♥️
Social relationships are powerful predictors of fitness across social animals. But *why*? In our new @cp-trendsecolevo.bsky.social paper, we outline testable predictions for why relationship quality and quantity adaptively vary across socio-ecological contexts. tinyurl.com/55dnkeh7
🐦 Exciting news! Our new paper is out in PLOS Biology: “A large-scale study across the avian clade identifies ecological drivers of neophobia.” Led by the #ManyBirds Project - 129 researchers, 82 institutions, 24 countries 🌍 🔗 journals.plos.org/plosbiology/... @themanybirds.bsky.social
A large-scale study across the avian clade identifies ecological drivers of neophobia
Neophobia (the aversive response to novelty) varies considerably across species and individuals, and can impact adaptability and survival. This study assesses neophobia in 1400 subjects from 136 bird ...

New paper out led by Damien Neadle proposing a protocol for standardized implementation and reporting of reliability analysis.
Many fields use video coding + interrater reliability. But: how reliable are those reliability tests? No standards exist for sample size, clip choice, or metrics - a blind spot. We present BRAVO—a first workflow to improve reliability by restricting coders DOF. [Paper is OA] #Reproducibility
Applications now open for UNIL Summer School on Modelling for Evo Bio (1–6 Sept 2025, Lausanne)! Aimed at PhD students interested in formal approaches to evolutionary ecology questions like sexual selection, social & life-history evolution. Scholarships available. Pls share! www.shorturl.at/znk5g
If you are wondering whether given the chance chimps recreate the famous bone-throwing scene from 2001 Space Odyssey, have a look at this paper we published a couple of years ago.
"Bone-related behaviours of captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes)" Chimpanzees spontaneously using bones ... as tools. That study (led by Alba Notes Rodrigo) is probably going to become more widely read soon, so let me quickly link that study here: link.springer.com/article/10.1...
New year, new paper! We continue to unpick the interplay between ecological upheaval and sociality and show altered social structure could result in 2x disease transmission rates. Senior authored by the unstoppable @ctestard.bsky.social. In Ecology Letters: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
A Natural Disaster Exacerbates and Redistributes Disease Risk Among Free‐Ranging Macaques by Altering Social Structure
