Kind of love the first day of summer at a university. There's all the fun excitement of graduation and move out, then suddenly, it's quiet and empty. Almost like an ecosystem after disturbance. 😅 Excellent environment for writing. 🖋️

When wildfires burn study sites or funding freezes, our researchers don’t quit, they pivot. From tracking megafire impacts to discovering coral reef resilience, they turn setbacks into breakthroughs for our changing world. Learn about how they overcome the challenges they face: ucdav.is/3OqIgQQ
In case anyone feels a little lost on how to break into the microbiome field/literature, I've recently put together some resources online: alexforscience.wordpress.com/resource-list/ Feel free to share with students - I hope it's helpful!

Academia can be very hard to break into. I’ve posted here a number of resources, both for microbiome research and teaching/outreach, that I hope anyone might find helpful. Microbiome Research…

So far, cool things at ESA that tell me I'm surrounded by my people: I've noticed 4 or 5 sciart booths in the exhibition hall selling ecology themed art. One booth is just piles of free books. According to an email, there's a gear swap booth where you can donate/get field gear. Awesome.
Looking forward to a week off ecology at ESA 2025!
Join me today 10:30-11:30 am and 3-4 pm at my poster on how Benzoapyrene, a ubiquitous environmental pollutant, affects the neurodevelopment and gut microbiome of model zebrafish - HMB 921 #ASMmicrobe
Ruby Scanlon, an undergrad in the Kent and Sharpton labs, is presenting her poster today at AAR 465! #ASMmicrobe
Come see Ebony Stretch, a grad student in the sharpton lab, present her poster on how PFAS affects the got microbiome in model zebrafish! #ASMmicrobe poster 923 in HMB02
Both captions and ASL interpreter at #ASMmicrobe opening last night! Great steps towards DEI. Captions weren't great but something to work on for next time.
