Two stories in @cenmag.bsky.social this week. I spoke to James Paulson and Ian Wilson at Scripps Research about their new study in Science, which found that one mutation to the hemagglutinin protein of an H5N1 virus switched the protein’s binding specificity from avian- to human-type receptors.
