The question of to what degree local police integrate into the broader federal machinery of immigration enforcement has become enormously controversial. Multiple Dem-led states have forbidden it. But multiple GOP-led states have mandated cooperation; and now ICE is really leaning on this.
For some context, this kind of local police to ICE pipeline has been a dream for decades. “Secure Communities” under Bush/Obama was an early iteration, but never got anywhere near the funding ICE has now. It generated enough backlash against Obama that ICE was reined in. Very different times now.
A cop in rural Texas pulls over a Latino. He demands papers; doesn’t get any. Arrests the guy, throws him in a local jail cell. Hours later, GardaWorld staff show up to put him on a bus with a dozen others. They drive him to the nearest ICE jail; a bus service for the machine of mass deportation.
