Just got a new laptop. I've spent the past 6 years using Raycast with spotlight (the search box on ⌘+space) disabled. Before disabling spotlight, I was shocked to discover... It's good now?! All the stuff I use raycast for: - toggle dark mode - unit conversions - calculations built in and fast?!

TIL Brewfiles exist! This feels like the sweet spot for me. Simpler than nix, while still providing a smooth setup experience in a 1-liner after cloning my dotfiles. My setup isn't too complex and I don't do it often, so excited to have a single easy to maintain solution for bootstrapping a box.

I've been using @typesafe-ts for a while now, some observations: - All errors should be defined as branded errors - Result is a 10x improvement over throw + try/catch - many dependencies (db query, fetch, etc.) introduce a pile of error cases - effect.website services seem great for containing this

A nuance I feel is missing here is that some things are easy to derive from first principles if you have a basic conceptual understanding. Others require a non-obvious jump. Let’s look at the same examples of sorting and forms.

knowing something means you've either experienced or studied something. I can write an HTML form from memory, but I can't invert a binary tree or write a sorting algorithm without looking it up (never needed it for real, never studied it) has nothing to do with my value as a person (lil thread 👇)

Now that writing more code (of more questionable quality) is fast & cheap, what code becomes worth writing? I think client-only tools and demos are a great use case. Most tech docs today are just markdown, but with LLMs do richer, interactive docs start to make sense?

The world is going to be a crazy place when/if models can successfully handle “solve P=NP. Make no mistakes” Which is recently starting to look more possible.

Here are 58 words of prompts to GPT-5.6 Pro that got the model to discover that the long-standing Dinitz-Garg-Goemans conjecture is false. Increasingly, prompt crafting is over-rated, ask for what you want. (Which itself can be a hard problem)

How in the world did we end up with YAML for CI pipelines (GH Actions), multi-container management (docker compose), AND container orchestration (k8s)? All the devops folks I know are competent engineers, why are they stuck with such wimpy syntax for managing this stuff?!

I've been trying to figure out a bug in a playwright browser test today. Turns out: - `browser.newPage()` is at `about:blank` (this makes sense) - mount things with `page.setContent(...)` etc., URL stays at `about:blank` (makes sense, didn't nav) `window.location.origin` is the _string_ `"null"`...

An advanced tool in the hands of a skilled expert producing a new advancement in the expert’s field doesn’t seem alarming to me at all. What an incredible opportunity for us all to explore and advance our fields more rapidly.

It won’t stop at math. Machines getting better at thinking through abstract problems than we are is going to be an emotional crisis for lots of people. I wish we were engaging that directly instead of having ridiculous shadow-debates about GPUs’ inherent thirst for water.

Something lost in agentic coding is being able to _feel_ if an API is good. APIs are like other machines interfaces: how they respond to being used is tangible. It’s something lost when only observing someone else operate the machine. I still don’t know if that will matter in 5 years, though.

It’s not the typing func doThing(blah blah) that does it for me, its the knowing that the interlocking components work in just the right way to make everything else hum along nicely. In other words, I do understand the magic of the machine. No coding required anymore.

Seattle has this problem where a bunch of restaurants will have some mandatory service charge, “living wage surcharge” or “regulatory response fee” or whatever other bullshit, instead of being normal businesses that charge for their goods/services and pay employees fairly. Not WINDY CITY PIE!

Get a ~$20 subscription to your service of choice (OpenAI, Anthropic, umans.ai, opencode.ai, etc.) and start by asking it to help with low stakes tasks that are easy for you to verify. Then try progressively more involved tasks until you find the limits of what you're happy to have the LLM do.

oh this makes it very obvious (love these charts!) use Luna until you get to Luna/max, then switch to Sol/med, don’t use Terra.

This is a super reasonable take that tons of people agree with. If you think this is an uncomfortable take that’s probably worth reflecting on for a while.
