After a few minutes, Sia lifted her hand gingerly, staring down at her niece. “You’re not allowed to go,” she told her, voice wobbly, bending over to kiss Elian’s forehead. “Please wake up.”

The future was uncertain. But for the first time since the Night Wraith entered Austin's life, he was certain he wouldn't have to face it alone anymore.

"What if it doesn't work?" Elle glanced at the silver lockbox resting on the coffee table. "Then I'll find something else. I will never stop looking until this is fixed, Aussie." For the first time in weeks, Austin felt the one thing he'd been missing. Hope. Small, fragile, but real.

"Sometimes I think.." Austin hesitated, "..maybe this is just how it's going to be forever." Elle immediately shook her head. "No." "You don't know that." "I don't. But I'm not giving up." "You've spent weeks doing nothing but research." "And I will spend however many more it takes."

For a long moment, he didn't say anything. His smiled faded. "You don't have'ta do this, Elle." "Yes I do, you know I do.." "It's not your fault." "I helped summon it." "You were a kid." "So were you." Silence settled between them.

Austin's expression shifted and he waited for her to continue. "And," she gulped, "in rare cases.. they can be used to imprison curses or malevolent spirits." Austin stared at the box. Then at her. "You think.." "I don't know," she shook her head, "But I hope.. It's the first real lead I've had."

Austin leaned in closer to look at the silver box. "Don't look very magical." "It won't unless it's activated," Elle explained. "What does it do?" Elle took in a slow breath. "I learned about them in class. They're.. ancient, they can seal dangerous magic.."

Austin sighed deeply before pulling a blunt out of his pocket. "Feels like we might need this before you explain that one. Got it from Indi. Said it might help me sleep." Elle didn't argue. She took the blunt and inhaled deeply, hoping it helped calm her frayed nerves and took her mind off Bear.

His eyes wandered to the coffee table in front of them, scanning the books before his eyes landed on something else. An ornate silver box. Its surface shimmered softly, intricate runes winding across every edge. "S'that?" Elle felt the corners of her mouth tug into a smile. "A magical lockbox."

Elle smiled faintly. "Dad and I have been working on it." Austin slowly looked around the room, before plopping down onto the couch. "It suits you." "I think so too," she said while sitting down next to him.

Across the room stood her potion corner. A grand cauldron stood in the center, while Alex had carefully hung shelves along the wall that held jars of herbs, crystals, potion ingredients, and neatly labeled bottles she'd gathered during her studies. It wasn't perfect. But it was hers.

One side of the attic had an old couch that had already been there, its cushions comfortably worn from decades of use. In front of it sat a coffee table that had been rescued from a thrift store, now covered with magic tomes from Elle's endless research.

Over the past several weeks, another part of the house had slowly been coming to life. The attic had sat untouched since they bought the house from it's last owners, a couple pieces of forgotten furniture and boxes left behind. Alex suggested turning it into a space Elle could call her own.

She led Austin up the stairs, and instead of stopping on the second floor to go to her room, she kept going. "What—" His eyes widened as they stepped into the attic, "whoa."

By the time Austin arrived that afternoon, the house was quieter than ever. He stepped inside without his usual awkward greeting, immediately wrapping Elle in a hug before she'd finished saying hello. Neither of them said much. They didn't have to.

Elle couldn't bring herself to watch. Instead, she sat on the back porch steps with tears silently rolling down her cheeks. When she finally managed to speak, there was only one person she wanted. "Can Aussie come over?" Alex didn't hesitate. "Yes. I'll call Teddy."

The house felt impossibly empty without the steady sound of paws following someone from room to room. Alice cried quietly while helping gather Bear's favorite toys and Alex buried him in the backyard, under the birch tree where he spent countless afternoons sleeping in the sunshine.

For as long as Elle could remember, Bear had been there. He was there when she learned to walk, patiently letting her tug on his ears. He was there through scraped knees, bad dreams, birthdays, holidays, and countless afternoons spent chasing tennis balls across the backyard.

With every rainbow comes a little rain. Or a lot. Bear passed peacefully in his sleep. No emergencies. No frantic rush to the vet. Just one final, gentle goodbye after a lifetime well lived.

Odin would take to the skies. Elle would close her eyes. And for a few fleeting moments, she could watch the world through the eyes of a crow.

It took practice. The first few attempts left her dizzy, stumbling into bookshelves and tree trunks as her own vision fought with his. But eventually it became second nature.

He could soar silently over the Realm—or even Strangerville—and with enough concentration and a simple sight-sharing spell, Elle found that she could briefly borrow one of his eyes, seeing the world exactly as he saw it.
