MS/MS suggests they're related to the coprinoferrin family. The genome also confirms G. adspersum as a prolific producer of triterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids, with implications for wood decay, tree health, and bioactive natural products. Open Access 👇 doi.org/10.1099/mic.... #Mycosky #Fungi

Siderophores and secondary metabolites produced by Ganoderma adspersum

Ganoderma adspersum is a white-rot wood-degrading basidiomycete of ecological, biotechnological and medicinal interest. In addition to its role in lignin degradation, it produces bioactive metabolites...

First we sequenced its genome, a first for this species, and years in the making. Hidden in there: a non-ribosomal peptide synthetase gene sitting next to a monooxygenase, the classic signature of a hydroxamate siderophore. Then LC-ES-MS on the iron-starved cultures confirmed it. 2/3

We starved a fungus of iron to see what it would make. Ganoderma adspersum answered with a group of siderophores, iron-scavenging molecules, that nobody has ever described. 🍄🧬 Here's how we found them. 1/3

Today, a United States Senator was arrested for asking a question of a federal official, in a federal building, as was his right. If it can happen to a sitting U.S. Senator, it can happen to anyone. Silence is complicity. We are at a crossroads. We must speak up. @alex-padilla4ca.bsky.social
