I generated a binrg command, which is like grep except it searches text inside pdf, Word, LibreOffice, and other binary document formats. I needed it because I've been working with a bunch of .odt files for my next book: github.com/asweigart/bi...

GitHub - asweigart/binrg: A ripgrep-like utility that searches binary formats: PDF, DOCX, ODT, RTF, and more. Written in pure Rust.

PSA: It's even worse. Craig not only operated a revenge porn website, but he also was engaging in racketeering by secretly running several shell companies that offered a paid service that would remove your revenge porn *from the revenge porn distro sites he owned*.

Does everyone here know that @craigbrittain.com, who is currently masquerading as an anti-MAGA warrior, was fined in 2016 for operating a revenge porn website? A *lot* of y’all follow him. ⚠️ Marked as unsafe. ⚠️ www.ftc.gov/news-events/...

Custody is decided by how much money you can put into the legal system. Trying to appease your abuser is an instinctual survival strategy. Society has to get wise to these standard abuser claims against their victims.

New: We found 50 cops who misused Flock cameras and other license-plate readers for personal purposes, often to spy on their girlfriends or ex-wives. He "watched every single move I made. ... Who do you turn the chief of police in to?" wapo.st/3S6rTuo

She left her ex. He secretly tracked her through a network of policing cameras.

Flock’s array of license-plate cameras was built to fight crime. But at least 50 law enforcement officers were charged with or accused of misusing it and other systems.

The diarrhea lettuce company, Taylor Farms, uses slave labor contracted from the Arizona Dept. of Corrections. The backbreaking labor is often performed by imprisoned Mexican nationals who would be otherwise ineligble to work in the US. They are paid $1.50 an hour.

The Diarrhea Lettuce Company Has Been Linked to Forced Labor

The lettuce-producing Taylor Farms was linked to the widespread use of prison labor before its involvement in a cyclospora outbreak.

If there is a second pandemic, the US is going to be screwed. There is no plan other than to let it burn through the population while these jokers sell a healthy diet (i.e. all beef) and exercise as the cure. And maybe some unrelated drug that makes you poop yourself raw in a Walmart.

BASH: How do you prepare for next pandemic? RFK Jr: We did almost everything wrong B: But what about now? K: We need to protect our rights B: ? K: During covid we dismantled our rights B: But I'm asking what *to* do K: You were part of the problem B: You want to sit here and attack me?

Huh. Why shouldn't apps have a little circle-? button next to everything? It seems ridiculous that to answer "What is this?" the user has to search help files. Has this been thought of/rejected before? Or is the reason we don't do it just programmer laziness that resists writing documentation?

Just in case you still use any Basecamp products, DHH is crashing out about his AI product gently pointing out that it’s bad for him to have extermination fantasies about the Roma people.

DHH tweet saying “This is why we need competition and open weights in Al. Imagine a world where only Anthropic sat as the moral arbiter of acceptable speech. Fucking ridiculous. (Grok of course did it no problem, same too with Kimi K).” when presented with his blog post using a slur about the Roma people.

I saw Ross Katz's talk at PyOhio on fine-tuning local LLMs to do work on data too sensitive to send to AI services. Lots of great guidance for me since I'm my own testing with process and models.
