About Me:

My name is Amanda Carbonell. I am an author as well as a former Junior Literary Agent with Belcastro Literary Agency. While working as a literary agent I represented kidlit through adult works and loved every second of it!

As an author myself, I am represented by Sara Megibow of Megibow Literary Agency where I also dabble in the kidlit and adult space delving into the genres of horror, cozy fantasy, speculative, and more. I have worked alongside Simon Spotlight, an imprint of Simon & Schuster on an adorable middle-grade series, Mia in the Middle – I am working as a writer for books three and four. I also have another IP story completed with Disney that I can’t fully discuss yet.

I have helped over 200 authors and counting throughout my years as an author and formally as owning and operating Editing Tales. Most of my clients have gone on to obtain literary representation, offers from indie presses, have self-published, or have been traditionally published alongside their agents (after gaining representation).

My number one priority when it comes to helping authors is to first and foremost make it clear that my edits are merely suggestions based on my experience in the publishing industry. As my client, you are the author of your story! I am here to highlight your strengths, make developmental notes, and give feedback on the areas I think are hindering your stories true potential. Background is yellow. About Me Cont'd:

My strengths when it comes to developmental editing is to find what is missing. Most often it is typically that closer connection to your characters – that depth which makes them feel like a real person, like we are along for the ride in this story and are right there seeing it unfold, not being told about it and having everything summarized for us. I love to help authors expand what they know about their characters, get to the root of them, and allow for that first person experience (no matter the tense) to be at the forefront.

While editing, I also take a close look at the pacing; what is slowing down the story and what is possibly moving too fast! I make my suggestions based on what I see as well as examples/ideas on how to fix it. Alongside the pacing, we look at the plot and see if there are any holes along the way or what twists may be able to be added for strength/make your book stand out!

Other things I look at (depending on genre) are magic systems and the way in which they are being portrayed to the reader. Are there things that don’t quite make sense? Where does the magic originate? Who knows about the magic? Is it common within the MCs world? What abilities are there? What is rare? How does it work? So many questions I’m asking myself and looking to be answered as I read.

I also take a look at your world building and offer as much feedback as I can there from small towns to cities, to the people to the speculative creatures, I want to help you show it all.

Along the way and in my edit letters (for long form edits), I tend to also make miscellaneous notes with craft book suggestions and of course, random suggestions that popped into my head while reading that I feel will help you going forward.

My edits are meant to guide the

It is with an incredibly heavy heart that I make this post. I am, sadly, stepping away from agenting. I loved every single moment of being an agent. I loved my clients. I loved their books. I loved meeting and connecting with other industry professionals and all of the friends I've made

I have a new client!!! Madison's thriller novel made me FERAL for the group of moms in her story living in an HOA community who love to sip some wine, gossip, chat about the PTA & soon find themselves with big secrets to hide when one of them goes missing. 🍷 1/2

The text to the right reads:

Madison Cowsert is an adult thriller author currently working on edits to her debut novel featuring a fun but catty group of moms with even bigger secrets to hide! For fans of Desperate Housewives, Lucy Foley, & Big Little Lies.

More about Madison:

Madison is a military wife and proud mom of two girls living in Washington. Prior to living in Washington, Madison lived in sunny Orlando, Florida where she discovered her love for reading and creating stories during those rainy afternoons between theme parks. With a growing TBR list and a passion for thriller stories, Madison spends most of her free-time drafting twisty, character driven stories that will leave you on the edge of your seat. When she's not lost in a book or sketching out her next plot twist, you'll probably find her planning her next family trip to Disney!

If any editors are looking for a picture book featuring a grumpy goat and a nervous horse learning how to coexist in the same pasture, I would love to send it your way! 🩷 (Mockup made on Canva, using all Canva graphics/designs, this is not the art 🩷)

Top of half of image has a blue background with soft blue and white clouds. There is a horse to the left, a goat to the right, and farmhouse in the center, a chicken to the left, and a pesky mole.
Bottom half of the page has fun stars, squiggles, and other doodles.

The text reads (in red) BENNIE & CHANCE

Text below reads:

Bennie the goat had the pasture all to himself—and he liked it that way.

No one to share his apples, his shady spot, or his favorite patch of grass. Just peace and quiet. That is until Chance, a clumsy, nervous horse, trots in and turns Bennie’s perfect pasture upside down!

Can a grumpy goat who hates sharing learn that friendship is worth making room for?

chill very early announcement but i will be reopening general queries on September 1st and closing at midnight on September 14th! my bipoc query form is open year-round so if you're under that umbrella do not feel rushed! but for everyone else that is the window 💜

There is no food in Gaza. Please share this and bear witness is nothing else. People are eating leaves to survive but everyone is suffering immensely. The children. The elderly. The new mothers. The husbands and sons and brothers getting shot at just to try to get “aid”. We have failed as humans.

Hello! I wanted to provide a bit of clarity on some of my rejections currently, a bit of insight into my brain. A thread: For starters, at this current moment there a few reasons for some of my rejections, the main one is word count. Typically, for myself, if anything is over 100K, I'm 1/?
