Guterres walked through Saydnaya. But Saydnaya was one prison among more than a hundred —and around 95 are reportedly back in use: same cells, new jailers, no oversight. The archives stay closed; not one family has a documented answer about a missing relative. One prison is shown. The system runs on.

Got my copy of The Blood Between Us: Syria’s Revolutionary Transition by @qunfuz.bsky.social today.I’m looking forward to reading it.Robin has followed Syria for many years with care, honesty, and a sharp eye for the details that often get lost.I’m also glad to find a small quote of mine in the book
In Feb 2025, I returned to Syria and walked back into Branch 251 — the cell where Assad’s intelligence first detained me in 2011. I found new prisoners sitting on the same floor. My new piece on why the new Syria has not dismantled the old prison system: www.thedial.world/articles/new...

One Thousand and One Nights in Saydnaya Prison We are exhibiting this old Arabic volume in our Berlin exhibition on Saydnaya Prison. It contains three stories — Judar, The Girls of Baghdad, and Qamar al-Zaman — and belonged to the prison library built by prisoners over many years in the 1990s.
We are exhibiting this old Arabic edition of Goethe’s The Sorrows of Werther in our Berlin exhibition, alongside a wider collection of books and personal belongings from Saydnaya Prison — including letters, hidden messages, and other traces of prison life.

I spoke at length in this DW Arabic interview about the reuse of Assad regime prisons, the inheritance of prison systems in Syria, and my last detention in September. I also tried to address a central question: has the prison nightmare truly ended in post-Assad Syria? youtu.be/bdZ-7NmZnPM?...

Leaked CCTV from Suwayda Hospital (July 16, 2025) shows gov. forces shelling the building, assaulting staff, and executing civilians — one killer wore an ISIS patch. We’re investigating these crimes just as we did ISIS & Assad crimes. Justice must be universal. #Suwayda #JusticeForSyria #HumanRights
Yusuf Al-Labbad was not killed in a vacuum. His death is a direct result of unchecked crimes, official lies, and a system built on impunity. Every crime we fail to confront becomes permission for the next. #JusticeForYusuf #CoastalMassacres #Syria #EndImpunity #NoJusticeNoPeace
Yusuf Al-Labbad walked into the Umayyad Mosque alive — and left as a corpse. The official story? He “hit his head on hard objects” by himself in a guarded room. No cameras. No witnesses. No medical report. This wasn’t suicide. It’s state violence — again. #JusticeForYusuf #Syria #EndImpunity

Syria is secretly reshaping its economy. The president’s brother is in charge.
A shadow committee is remaking Syria's economy with secret takeovers of Assad-era companies. A Reuters investigation has found the new president's brother, Hazem al-Sharaa, along with a sanctioned Australian are in charge of untangling corruption. But to do so, they're making deals with businessmen many Syrians associate with years of ill-gotten gains.
