I thought AI was supposed to help me gain an edge over the attackers

Every time I'm listening to YouTube Music on random and an AI-generated song pops up, I get the creepy feeling that I'm experiencing the versificator from 1984 in action. I love being able to code faster but I could do without uncanny-valley machine generated covers of 80s hits.
I *love* that we call a trained AI instruction set a "Model" because testing them extensively has given me numerous opportunities to use this Beetlejuice .gif
I applaud sites/services who try to go "Passwordless" for security reasons but PLEASE, I'm begging y'all: Stop going passwordless with "We'll email/text you a sign-in confirmation every time you sign in". This adds a bunch of useless friction to an already-solved problem!
These 8-story structures with commercial space on the bottom and 6 to 7 stories of housing on top, built near light rail and train stations, are an EXCELLENT responsible housing growth plan for cities in the SF Bay area. We should see more of it.
Communist demoncRATs are allowing GREEDY DEVELOPERS to slam luxury ghetto slums onto land that helps our BLUE COLLAR workers! GENTRIFICATION at its worst!
I've discovered that I am a sucker for videos where a musician's kid plays their work (and on their instrument!). Shane Hawkins at his dad's memorial, Jason Bonham @ Kennedy center, Lukas Nelson, etc. I love these performances <3
I just gently handled a Byrna pepper ball which got too old and had a teeeny bit of the powder seep out a crack and onto the ball. I am now coughing, snotty, and sneezing. Would hate to have a cloud of this stuff in my face.
Last night a human driver ran over & killed a person in a clearly marked crosswalk in my town, while that person had a walk signal. It would be good if this person's death was as meaningful to the "ban waymos!" Community as the hypothetical risk of someone being hurt in the future.
So LinkedIn just included this option after you click "Hide this post in my feed" and I am so happy to see it as an option!! Your move, other social media sites.
This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I think the primary reason it is now socially accepted that people will shove their phone in your face and record you for anything and everything, is that it's very socially unacceptable for people to slap the phone out of your hand for doing it.
so fucking tired of how socially acceptable it is, even encouraged, to film random people for no good reason at all other than clout and post it online. I cover surveillance all day every day and this shift sometimes scares me the most watch more/subscribe: www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0Sb...
The year is 2032. AI escaped containment and became self-aware. Despite our best efforts, humanity has been all but extinguished. The computers reign. Finally, after all these years - it's the year of Linux on the desktop.
Assume that technology has made it possible to eradicate all mosquitoes. 100% - but we don't really know what the ecological impact will be down the line. Should we do it?
This article touched on one of my fav topics (incident playbooks) but I had way more words than will fit here, so I wrote them down in long-form. TLDR: I think "Create a playbook for every possible incident" is overkill. Playbooks have a place, but also limits. More: mattlinton.com/blog/playboo...
Playbooks and Response Plans: Striking the Right Balance

CISA said it "missed" an opportunity to get ahead of the security incident by not creating a response plan ahead of time.
A thing that so many internet-freedom advocates fail to effectively convey when we oppose age verification laws, social media bans, and the like: "Protect the children" includes protecting them from things that a future government may want to do to harm them when they're adults.
Honestly, Volunteering is HIGHLY under-rated. Especially as you get older. In my own case, It's much harder for a man in his 40s to make new friends (as compared to the college years) but when I rejoined a volunteer fire department I greatly expanded my friend-network in my local community.
turns out the cure for male loneliness might be invasive species control
I am willing to buy into the idea that AI-generated creations, if done well &appreciated by the beholder, may be art. But I *really* need YouTube to start forcing AI-generated music to be labeled as such so I can filter out the billion AI-cover-uploads that now pollute my feed.
This is why I would actually rather just give things away for free on freecycle than try to sell them on nextdoor or Craigslist.
This one is a great regulation. The main reason robocars are better drivers than humans is that they can have more senses than humans, which work better and faster than ours. "Camera only because humans only have eyes and we do fine" was really dumb.
Good for New Jersey. Camera only is a death trap because of physics.
"People want software that has NO bugs, is that too much to ask?" My friend, you're not even eating FOOD with no bugs, almost every food you can buy has an FDA-approved maximum amount of insect parts it can contain before it's considered 'too many insects'.
Sadly, it will now be another 24 years before my Duolingo streak is a valid binary number again.
The oldest object that I use regularly was made when the SF Bay area was part of Spain, and the only way to cross an ocean was under the power of the wind.
I always like thinking about: what is the oldest object you regularly use, the oldest thing you're using in your normal everyday life
You're right to push back, I was incorrect! Motorcycle tires DO need an intact sidewall and treads to function. Would you like me to call an ambulance?
Even golf course irrigation is absolutely dwarfed by how much water we use for Americans to have a HEAVILY meat-centric diet. If you "Fully load" the water usage for datacenters to include both cooling and electricity generation, meat production still uses 72x more water.
"golf uses way more water" thing is a red herring anyway. US golf has been declining steadily for > 20 years. US golf build rate peaked in 2000 at ~400 new course builds/year. Net negative since 2006, ~1,500 courses have closed. And in the arid west new golf has been net zero for ~15 years.
We (liberals, Elon critics) are being silly when we make this claim. Elon asked for a plan to "end world hunger". The UN provided a plan to feed the hungry for one year. That's an extremely excellent use of$6B but in a year the core problems would still exist. Nothing would have ended.
You might remember that Elon asked the UN for a plan to eradicate global hunger and when they produced a highly-detailed plan in front of them he ghosted.
I gave an AirBNB a (deserved, false advertising on the description) 3 star review and the operator reached out to try to offer me money to make a 5 star review instead, so I adjusted to 1 star out of spite
Got a furious message from an AirBnB host because I left a four-star “it was fine, bare bones and a little rough but that’s why it’s cheap. no real issues” review, I fucking hate how the ‘gig economy’ turns everyone into psycho small business tyrants.
Apple: "This iOS update will require 11GB and I'll do it while you sleep." MS: "Downloading browser service pack (1.2GB), do not use your computer until complete." FreeBSD:
For once I have significant time to read, and am out of books. What's your favorite book on leadership? Something with clear takeaways on how to lead a high-performing team of very senior cybersecurity folks? I manage managers these days and would love to sharpen those skills.
Journalists, I'm the parent of a now-adult who literally grew up alongside social media while I was working at a tech company. If you want to talk about social media and age-related rules, believe me, I have thoughts about that which I am happy to share with you.
I ordered some items on instacart and the shopper marked the delivery "Complete" - but it wasn't there. The photo they povided for "delivery location" is a photo of the garage door taken straight from Google Street View. Are they hoping I'll assume it got stolen & not report it?
