that student stayed after class yesterday. he asked if i could re-explain some things, as he is still struggling with his memory post-concussion. he mentioned this is his fourth concussion. FOURTH?!??? yes, fourth. and he is only taking one semester off from football. HOW is this allowed?????…

omfg - i got a second notice for another student today! that’s TWO students already with concussions and it’s only day one of the semester. (and that’s just out of the students in my classes). smh

y’all. i just heard the same person say the following to a class. a grown man ranting about “women’s time of the month” to a room of 18-20 year olds (and in a class on deviance 🙃). WEIRDO behavior. not to mention the biological essentialism and heteronormativity 🥴🥴🥴

A screenshot from the notes app which says: “If you're a man, you may not know yet, that once a month, women get moody. They may get angry. They may be both. For those of you who haven't been in a long term relationship with a woman, you will learn.

For a few days every month, they will be tearful. They will get snippy at you. And then they go back to normal. It's their body chemicals, their brain chemicals. They can't help it.”

overheard a colleague telling a class of students: “You guys are soft as a generation, because my generation, we got beatings,” and then proceeded with an example. like 🥴🥴🥴 wow, yes you must be so much better off now, as a whole adult dumping decades old trauma onto a bunch of 18 year olds.

a student came to my office hours today. i asked her what i could help her with and she said, “Nothin. I just wanted to hang out with you.” lol. she’s a junior and she’s making a point to visit her professors during office hours to get to know them outside of class. we had a nice chat 🙂

i used the covid pandemic as an example in my intro to sociology course today - i asked my students what grade in school they were in spring 2020 and most of them said 5th grade 🫠🫠🫠 that feels like it should be mathematically impossible

not me having to call my insurance company because of a denied claim and when i told them my birthday, they’re like “that is incorrect” 😶 TURNS OUT my employer incorrectly entered my birth year so now i gotta reach out to the HR person - who is also currently my student! - to fix her mistake 🙃

yooo. one of the HR reps from my school is taking my Intro to Sociology course. 👀 (i actually remember meeting her during my interview and her telling me she was taking courses.) i dunno how i feel about her taking my class though (it is an online class btw.) guess we’ll find out! 🙃

survived day one! 🎉 (even though i still don’t have all my syllabi done, lol) had my intro class today - they were rowdy! but it went super well (just had to stop a few times to bring them down) but compared to my intro class last fall that was CRICKETS every class, i’ll take rowdy over silent.

last year, getting ready for my first year as faculty, i bought a dressier pair of docs. decided to make new shoes a back-to-school tradition. look at these pink platforms i found! 🤩 (perhaps pushing boundaries of professional 🤷🏻‍♀️ but i found em used at a great price and could not, not get them!)

Pink doc marten platform boots.
