In Central Europe, forest management shapes post-disturbance recovery mostly through what’s left behind (disturbance legacies 🪵🌱) than impacting forest growth rates 📈 + Set-aside forests regrow canopy height as fast as managed forests New paper out in ForEcolMngt 🌳 doi.org/10.1016/j.fo...

In 2023, after a wave of severe forest disturbance across Central Europe, we made a big group effort of surveying post-disturbance regeneration. It involved a lot of scrambling through brambles, but also a lot of fun (and reassuring to see a lot of regeneration). Happy to see the results published!

Central Europe has seen unprecedented forest disturbances recently, but how are forests recovering? We surveyed disturbance hotspots in 10 countries 3-5 years after disturbance, finding ample tree regeneration and no signs of forest loss (median 4750 stems/ha), but... 1/2 doi.org/10.1111/gcb....
