Today is the anniversary of The Battle of Crater in 1864. What started with great hopes ended in the ashes of dismal failure. Individual failures were eclipsed by the failures of senior leaders. There are a lot of misconceptions about the battle but this book is the best study.

Just a reminder the first battle of the Civil War took place today in Carthage, MO. Franz Sigel lead 1100 2nd Brigade, Missouri’s troops…mostly German-Americans…against Sterling Price’s 4,000 Missouri State Guardsmen.
